Remember all those HELPFUL leaflets and free gifts you get on the birth of your child???? Oh well we get them here in Germany and as you do-or would do if you lived here-I sent of for this that and the other-not that I needed them, more cos I just had to fill in a few forms and the postage was free-lol
So i am sitting here today, minding my own business when the door bellrings.......trot trot-thats me going down stairs to answer door.....there is noone there.....its that classic scene where you look everywhere but the person has vanished...but wait!!! whats that...oh goodie santa came early and left me a parcel on the doorstep.....
So I rush back upstairs eager to open said parcel, not having a clue what it is as I am not expecting anything.......so am pleasantly suprised if not curious to find myself with 3 jars of Hipp babyfood, two packets of Hipp baby formula, two packets of Hipp cereal meals, a lego explorer toy and lots of handy leaflets offering information on the nutritional value of Hipp.....well not as far as I am concerned cos I cant read German so they are as handy as the condems I was given once when I was 7 months
pregnant!!!!
I guess they waited so long to send this free sample pack as you have to put the date of birth of your child and they figured they would wait till he was 4months+ as that is when they recommend the food is from...............Alas Mr Hipp I have been getting your food for over a month now as my son started with 3 months but thanks all the same as it saves a few pennies.
I am sad to say but having checked the uk website out www.hipp.co.uk, there is no free sample package available but would recommend enquireing if one is available as they are always looking for new customers.
So why buy Hipp organic or BIO as we call it here in germany? Is it the lure of knowing that no synthetic sprays or fertilisers are used during the growth of their organic products?Or is it because all fruits and vegetables are grown in healthy soil? or does the idea that Hipp has a policy to recycle 97% of all its waste products?
This organic trend in foods is becoming on the increase where babies food is concerned so I think there are too many products out there to say you chooses it for the reasons I have stated.....I personally buy Hipp because I find it offers a much more varied and cheaper range of food for the Mothers of today......
When I first started buying jars-which I did even when I was pregnant....just a couple of jars a week soon adds up and dramatically reduces the cost if like me you wait till baby is much older to make my own food....I was surprised that only a few companies offered the smaller 125g jars, compared to the larger 190 g jars. Price wise the smaller do work out more expensive but in reality produce less waste as your baby doesnt need so much to start with and unless you are going to use a big jar within two or three days-which makes for alot of food in one sitting and also not much variety-the smaller are more practical.
I pay 1,20 (euros) for the big jar and 89cents for the smaller but at this time I am happier with this.
The jars themselves are very colourful, a white band showing the food withini.e. carrots or potatoes etc etc...also the famous HIPP logo-a colourful pink H, arather quaint blue i with the dot being a love heart and ond orange and one purple P with the inner hole of the P being again a heart shape.
Each jar lists all ingredients from the most to the least and its nutritional value...I will not attempt to go into these details as each jar is different, but suffice to say the facts are labelled clearly. each jar also offers you The Hipp Bio Guarentee, that only organic foods are used.
To serve the food you must first remove the lid...REALLY????LOL....but as with other jar foods it clearly states that if the lid does not POP when taken off then discard it....infact take it straight back to where you got it and ask for a replacement.....as due to the vaccuum seal being broken when there is no POP, the food has been contaminated and is BAD...
You can either place a lidless jar in hot water and warm it this way or spoon some into a plastic bowl and stick in microwave to warm...but remember never reheat food and only reuse food that has been left in the fridge for a maximum 3 days.
Joseph Hipp first began producing Hipp, at the end of the 19th century because his wife on the birth of twins-after 6 other children-was unable to breast feed. He developed a milk enriched rusk flour, which soon became famous and was being sold to friends and neighbours. His son Georg split away and developed the food side of Hipp and it was to be his son Claus who introduced this organic food to the uk in 1995.
To date there is a huge variety of food and drinks.....from baby milks and foods to toddler meals, breakfast cereals, desserts and savories.
So again i ask why Hipp? Well quite simply its just another jar on the shelf of a local supermarket, but the difference is that it does offer a more trusted product, able to give your child a better start in life. Also the range is not only varied but interesting.......risotto, pasta, green vegetable to name a few of the foods from 4 months, and salmonwith tagliatelle or spagetti with mozarrella and tomato for the older child. They also offer a variety of products to use if your child has allergies. But Hipp has drinks to use from the 1st week your baby is born, offering a variety of teas to many juices later on.
Be you a one off jar buyer or a mother who relies heavily on this quick alternative of feeding from jars, I can only say that you cant ignore Hipp....give it a try. If your baby doesnt like it then its ok but you are offering a healthy option in a day and age where every other day we hear how this food or that is bad for us.
And if you arent sure....do as I suggest and write to Hipp through their web site and ask for a sample package.....its free and gives you a chance to see for yourself how good or bad this product is....ask for their packet foods too, which are cereal based and you just add water....these are wonderful alternatives to afew of the evening desserts on offer in jars which I find tend to go to water after a few minutes of heating and are only good for your baby to drink...which goes against the whole point of giving baby solids.
I use other brand name baby foods too, but on the whole do find Hipp to be more compatible with my babys tastes. Its the variety that I like and only hope that in the UK the variety is as varied. If not just pop into www.hipp.de and look at the choices we have and then suggest they be introduced into stores in the uk...why not? You have nothing to lose by asking and can only improve a product that really if I am honest is nearly (BESIDES THE WATERY DESSERTS) perfect.
