Even though my local HMV is a very small one it still has nearly all the variety that it’s bigger brothers and sisters have. It has a range of all different kinds of music, all formats of games, videos, DVDs and posters. Bigger HMV stores also stock clothing but sadly my local store doesn’t have this available.
The different kinds of music it offers are Rock, Punk, R+B, Garage, trance, Pop, Hard House, Acid House, Rap, Indy and more. As you can see from my opinions on albums I go for Rock music and HMV are not bad for supplying new and old albums of bands that aren’t that popular in the rock world nevermind the Pop world. But with good news comes bad news, these albums come with not so good prices.
The game section in the store near me is very limited. It still has all the formats but most space is taken up by Playstation games which is a disadvantage to other non-PSX gamers and I’m one of those disadvantaged people! I’m an absolute PC gamer and slowly the variety of games available has declined dramatically. Although, this fact doesn’t bother me because all around HMV there are gaming stores that are dedicated to games only.(see opinion on 'Game')
There is a HUGE variety of videos that come in all genres, ages and prices. There is a section where the latest videos released are displayed then there is another section where videos from all centuries are available including all of the ‘JAWS’ series and lots more. There is then a box set section where series’ from ‘BTVS’ to ‘Star Trek’. There is also an on-going sale that sells fairly old videos from £2.99 to £7.99.
I don’t own a DVD player but HMV have a growing amount purchasable. With all the latest releases included with normal retail prices. The bigger stores don’t have a growing amount of DVDs since they have all of them on offer.
HMV have a range of posters from WWF to Rock bands to Pop groups. These sometimes vary in price but it depends on the quality and the popularity of the poster.
Lastly the bigger stores around sometimes sell clothing. This clothing is mostly rock clothing. These clothes include hooded tops and T-shirts. The rock bands featured on these clothes are popular ones such as ‘Limp Bizkit’ and ‘Green Day’. They have ‘Papa Roach’ clothes but I want Linkin Park who are also quite popular but this band wasn’t supplied which I was surprised at since they had all these other popular rock bands available. The prices were reasonable but not better than anywhere else. There are stores which do them cheaper so stick with those if it’s good prices your after but if you want quality you should pay a visit to your local HMV.

Advantages: A good range of CDs. You will be able to pick up semi-obscure stuff here. (I found it to be the only place who'll sell Weird Al) Disadvantages: More costly than Virgin. Queues are badly arranged.

Advantages: A very good selection, excellent layout, spacious well appointed premesis, superb 'Urban' selection some fantastic bargains to be had in the sales. Disadvantages: Some non-sale items are eye wateringly expensive, staff not so good with ordering or finding stock, occasional staff levelling problems, very little in the choice of alternative music formats eg SACD , not so good for rock music.
