I don’t think I have ever been to HMV when there hasn’t been some offer on some of their products. Whether it is a 2 for £22 CD sale or a 4 for £20 video sale, there is always something from this, my favourite mainstream, chain music shops.

HMV sell everything you could want from a music shop and more:

CD’s of every genre – pop, rock, classical, alternative, easy listening, folk, world music, spoken word books, etc;

Videos of both TV and film, even selling some foreign films, musicals and oldies;

DVD’s are ever-expanding their reach in this store;

There is vinyl available for all you budding DJ’s and MC’s

There is also a wide range of accessories for your Hi-Fi, Personal CD player, with blank tapes, CD’s, videos, holders for all of the above, batteries, headphones, cleaners, etc.

Books available are some of the more trendy reads and also a lot of biographies of people in the music industry. Often you find that the books are offered at 2 for £10 which again is a fantastic bargain;

HMV also has a large selection of computer and console games available.

There are a range of shop sizes. In Glasgow there is a couple of HUGE shops and also at least one littler one. However, like the old saying – size doesn’t matter – it’s what you do with it that counts!!!!!! All the shops, big or small sell a wide selection of products available.

If they don’t have what you want in store you can order it and it will arrive in good time.

Another fantastic thing about HMV is that they do a 10% student discount. So, if you find one of those rare products that doesn’t have some kind of offer attached you can just whip out your student card and voila, a 10% discount is yours!!!!!

Standard priced goods are £10.99 for a video and £12.99 for a CD (£3.99 for a CD single), £29.99 - £49.99 for a game and £19.99 for a DVD. Butback to these discounts. It is so common for videos, CD’s and DVD’s to be in a special offer of some sort that I think it is worthwhile waiting for a little while to see if what you are looking for gets put out in part of a special deal. I got Austin Powers2 only about a month after it was released on video along with two other videos for only £20!

The layout of the store is good, with a clear section for charts stuff, a video section, a rap section, dance section, etc. It is spacious and I have rarely felt crowded, except perhaps when racing for the ultra cheap copy of some fantastic CD or other.

All round it seems to be superb value for money, there is no problem returning stuff and I visit it regularly –now off you go!!!!

We have a decent-sized one here in Lincoln, not as big as that in Glasgow I'd imagine though. I tend to find the odd bargain there too, but only after looking really hard through tons of albums. Great op. R :)

I agree. It's a great shop! Much better than Virgin! Thanks for the op. Lisa

HMV (Shop) - review by Manx

Advantages: A good range of CDs. You will be able to pick up semi-obscure stuff here. (I found it to be the only place who'll sell Weird Al)
Disadvantages: More costly than Virgin. Queues are badly arranged.

Advantages: A very good selection, excellent layout, spacious well appointed premesis, superb 'Urban' selection some fantastic bargains to be had in the sales.
Disadvantages: Some non-sale items are eye wateringly expensive, staff not so good with ordering or finding stock,occasional staff levelling problems, very little in the choice of alternative music formats eg SACD , not so good for rock music.
