HMV is one of the top high street shops in the UK, it is one of the main places to go for chart music CDs and DVDs, however there is a lot of competition with Virgin and supermarkets such as Asda and Tesco which all sell CD's and DVD's at reasonable prices.
The HMV store in Plymouth is fairly large, there are two floors. When you first walk in, you notice that it is fairly dark inside...however you can still see where everything is! There is always loud music playing, although it's not extremely loud, you can still here yourself think! The stands at the front of the shop usually have CDs and DVDs that have been released that week, then there are usually about four stands that have the discounted stock. What I like about HMV is that they seem to have sales every week, whether it is 3 DVDs for £20 or CD's for £3.99. There is usually quite a lot to choose from, most of the time I never see anything I want...but you can be lucky sometimes, especially if there is something you have been looking for, for a while.
The chart CDs are positioned against the wall and it is clear to see where the albums are and where the singles are. The singles are reasonably priced at either £1.99 for a 2 track CD or £2.99 for a maxi CD. I always buy my singles in HMV. Vinyl singles are also sold in HMV, although there is not really much to choose from.
If I were to buy a new CD then I have to admit that I would probably buy it from a supermarket as they tend to be at least a £1 cheaper than they are at HMV. I find that new albums sold in HMV are usually between £8 and £12. I would never pay more than £10 for a brand new CD, as that is just too much...especially when you can buy them elsewhere for a cheaper price.
The rest of the CD's in the shop are placed in different categories such as 'Dance', 'Rock and Pop' and 'Heavy Metal', the CDs are then put in alphabetical order to make it easier to find what you are looking for.
DVD's are quite expensive, usually about £12.99...however usually if you wait a few months, the price will go down and in the sales you can pick up DVD's for as little as £3.99. Again, I have never bought a DVD in HMV within the first few weeks of release, I'm more likely to buy it from a supermarket as they tend to be cheaper there.
Upstairs in the Plymouth store you will find a bigger selection of DVD's, there are a lot of comedy and television programmes on DVD for example. Also upstairs you can find a selection of books which are reasonably priced - the books are usually of novels which have been made into films. Music magazines are also sold here
I have to say that the staff are always very friendly, if you are looking for something specific and can't find it in the store they are happy to help you out. There are always staff on the tills and you usually get served straight away, the only time you really have to wait is when there is a big sale on, or if it is Christmas when everywhere is busy!
I always seem to be able to find what I'm looking for in HMV, they usually stock all singles which are released each week (not like Woolworths who only choose to stock a few). Although I have been caught once, when I wanted to buy a single on the second week of release, it wasn't anywhere in the shop! So if you want to buy a single I recommend you buy it the week of release just in case they take it off the shelves.
I would definitely recommend a trip to HMV, although the chart stuff may be quite high in price, there are always discounted stock and it is worth having a look...you might find something you have been looking for, for a low price!

Advantages: A good range of CDs. You will be able to pick up semi-obscure stuff here. (I found it to be the only place who'll sell Weird Al) Disadvantages: More costly than Virgin. Queues are badly arranged.
