I was given this printer for free – so right away it gets brownie points. I will list the manufacturer’s specs at the end of this review, and use this first part to run through the basics and my experience and usage of it.
Installation
My experience so far is that this machine is easy to use and very tolerant during connection. It has a parallel printer port, which will adapt/tolerate a parallel to USB cable if your laptop (like mine!) doesn’t have a parallel port. Installation is easy, for those running XP windowshardware installer will take good care of installing and making default – for those using a parallel to USB adaptor - you may need to change the port number and be sure, if you have 3 USB ports, that you put it back into the same port every time! otherwise it make a copy of the printer for that USB port – very confusing
when you see 3 of them installed.
This printer is rather large, and whilst it emits 59dB of noise, which isn’t that bad, if its not sat on a very very stable surface it can wobble around a lot and make lots of noise. So make sure you stand it on a stable surface for best results.
Cartridges
This business inkjet machine is for offices that need a network printer, and one that has high quality throughput with low cost, it will endure up to 10,000 sheets per month. This is a colour machine and has 4 individual toner cartridges (unlike the tri-colour packs you can get for other HP deskjets). It has black, yellow, cyan and magenta cartridges. These retail at anything from £8 - £20 – shop around! But the cartridges are 28ml and will last up to 1600 pages of print.
Speed and Usability
For printing of black and white pages only it will print roughly 15 pages per minute (A4) and 7 with colour. It has photo quality print capability and the few pictures I’ve printed out so far have been excellent, even just onto Inkjet paper, glossy paper and its more than acceptable. The print tray on this machine is very deep, with good guidelines for different sizes of paper. It will hold up to 250 sheets at a time and for those needing high volume printing, it has an in build 8mb memory, which in my experience so far, is enough to stop your computer being backed up with spooling.
I am as ever a fan of HP and the best thing for me about them and this printer itself, is its reliability. Providing you treat it with a little care and attention, it will serve you well. Fan the paper before you put it in and it will rarely get jammed (HP’s in my experience are always far more tolerant of user handling than any other brand of printer). Even if the printer does jam, it is easy enough to manipulate to remove.
The LCD screen is an easy to use little panel on the printer itself. It shows you the ink level for all 4 cartridges, nicely colour coded. The menu has a variety of options from printing tests pages to cleaning the heads and adjusting settings. It is discreet and on the front of the machine, v.easy to see and get to.
All in all this printer is fabulous. I expected, as it was a few years old, to be slow and cumbersome, but despite its size and rather dull colour, it runs well, its reliable and most of all it does the job. I would always advocate HP printers, my experience of them and more importantly this one, has been exemplary. The quality that it produces is perfectly fine in all regards.
