We purchased this at work predominently for printing our brochures and mailshot literature, and after a lot of research decided on this product from HP. The price was around £280 + VAT and delivery. We had always purchased HP products before, as they have proved themselves to be value for money as far as long service and reliability is concerned.
This printer is available in three configurations; The CP1700 is a standard A3 inkjet photo quality printer; the CP1700d is the same model, but comes with a 'duplex unit' which enables you to print documents double sided; the CP1700ps is a 'postscript edition' that comes with 'Adobe Postscript' software and configuration. We purchased the CP1700d option, as when printing our brochures we like to print two sided, and it works very well. The paper tray holds a resonable amount of paper - tray 1 (included) can hold up to 150 pages, whereas an additional tray 2 can be purchased which holds an additional 250 sheets.
Set up was easy, using the driver disk provided. You can connect this printer either by a USB or parallel connection. Bear in mind a cable is not provided so you will have to purchase whichever you prefer, in order to use this printer. It also has an infrared panel on the front of the machine, for connecting wirelessly to a laptop, for example. I have used this option, and it works very well. The laptop (running Windows XP Home Edition) detected the printer as soon as it was switched on and automatically installed the drivers required - how easy is that?! All ink cartridges are separate, which makes for good economy. Rather than replacing the whole tri-colour cartridge supplied with some other printers, when the cyan is empty, you can just buy a new cyan cartridge. Ink cartridges can be purchased for around £16 each . The printer also has replaceable printheads (again, cost of around £16 each), which cuts down the cost of repair, and without having to call out engineers, you can just buy a replacement and fit them extremely easily - if I can do it, anyone can!
Monthly print cycle maximum is a recommended 5,000 pages per month. The printer comes with a standard 1 year warranty, and an upgrade to this is available from HP. Print quality is superb. The maximum resolution available for printing is 2400 x 1200 dpi, which gives fantastic photo quality. Print speed is also good, starting at 16 pages per min draft black and white, down to 0.2 pages per min at full A4 photo best.
Overall a good, cost effective, reliable, heavy-duty A4 & A3 printer. Well recommended!
