However for all it's advantages it does have the odd gripe, there's only a small hard drive (like the evo), so don't expect to be able to store an infinite amount of music and videos. So somebody stole my Evo from yesterday, and then I noticed this hp Compaq and thought to myself..."Why not review this one too?" So here it is, a review on the HP Compaq Business Desktop dc5100.
The design is similar to the Evo but not quite the same, with the USB slots being more visible, and the fan being slightly different on the external. I haven't opened up either case though, so there maybe some drastic internal design differences (don't think the university would be too happy if I opened it and fidgetted with it in the library).
The speed is faster than the Evo (which I was very happy with overall)and it managed to open up I.E in rather quick time considering the unit is networked with around 1500 others at the uni. BTW I.E. Is my "Speed" test as most of the computers here lack the options of Firefox and Opera browsers, so I'm not just picking I.E. and saying it's the best, it's a mandatory choice.
The layout like I mentioned earlier is similar to the Evo with a floppy drive, headphone jack, speaker jack and 2 usb's. The key difference to you tecchy people it the CD drive has been improved to a CD-RW, so you can now do you own "mix CD's"/"Pirated music" (yet again I must stress I'm not advocating it, just stating that the drives are often used for it).
The reliability of the machine seems superb, I've never seen anyone in here have any problems with it at all. The again even if they did hp are well known for good customer support and excellently detailed manuals.
However for all it's advantages it does have the odd gripe, there's only a small hard drive (like the evo), so don't expect to be able to store an infinite amount of music and videos. Theres again enough for a "normal" user, but I have friends who'd fill up the hard disk in a month due to it's size. Sure getting a bigger hard disk wouldn't drive up the cost too much, but thats not the point, I'm reviewing whats in front of me, not what could be infront of me.
The graphics card again would seem limited (again it wouldn't be impossible to upgrade that) which is a shame as the computer is running incredibly quickly, which would allow most games to be played if you had the right cards.
The machine is very easy to use, literally turn it on, log in and your ready to go. Brilliant really, no messing about with this or that, just does what it needs to.
And the price, the final thing I will mention, is amazing, it's less than £300, it's basically a bare bones gaming PC just needing a new hard drive, a DVD drive and a graphics card. In other words you'd have a very good gaming PC for less than £400, thought very good isn't mind blowing it is far better than you'd expect at the price.
In summary, a brilliant machine, it's ready to go for office work, but would need a little bit of tinkering if your a gamer. Would fit will in any office and I'd have to say it edges out the Evo from yesterday's review due to the faster processor and the RW on the CD drive.

Quick review of HP Compaq Business Desktop Dc5100
Well I bought one quite cheaply but it only had 256 ram and a 40gb hard drive. I only spent a tad under £100 to upgrade it from the original spec to 2gb of ram and put in a whopping 500GB hard drive and now its a brilliant computer. There are various USB ports which mean I can have my keyboard, mouse, phone, iPod plugged in - with ports left over and the computer still not slowing down... ...

Advantages: 2ghz celeron fast enough for and application Disadvantages: not ideal for high end gaming
This PC will do if you want to browse the web and use word, If your wanting to do anything like gaming and 3d modeling then I suggest you look for a system with a P4 or Athlon in it and an AGP card. The 256Mb of RAM that came with the system I replaced with 1Gb just to speed things up.
But as it says in the item description its aimed at a business but has no CD-RW or DVD drive a huge necessity today for almost every user
Windows XP pro and the ...

Advantages: Value for money Disadvantages: If you are looking for a powerful machine this is not the one for you
I used this computer everyday at my school and have had no problems with it. This computer system has very decent specification:
Ram - 512 mb
This is more than suficiant enough for all computing needs at the present time but may be needed to be upgraded for gaming purposes.
Hard drive - 80gb
I think you will find this is allot of memory and is a very decent amount and enough to store files for all buisness users.
CD- Drive - allowing people ... ...ports - I think you will find that this is very usefel and convinient.
I think overall this is a pc that is worth is money although it is not suitable for a game designer I feel it is a very suitable machine for buisnesses that need loads of systems as the specification of the machine is more than enough for all buisnesess and the cost of the machine is worth the cash.
I hope you Find this infomation Useful ...

Advantages: Sturdy, nice "quick buttons"*, feels like every key works really well Disadvantages: no number pad :-S
Right the keyboard which matches the HP7540 Screen and the HPCompaqBusinessDesktopdc5100Desktop. A similar gray/silver and black colour scheme to the other hp stuff I've reviewed and tbh a similar feel to it, of being an office device rather than a keyboard made for gaming and like all HP products it's very effective.
The keyboard despite looking ordinary enough, isn't, the number pad on this one I'm using is seperate (well attached by a cable as opposed to a one peice keyboard), which is just complicating things from the off. I can only assume the idea is to save space in an office building and have people use the numbers above the letters, which if it is, then why have a number pad full stop?
The quick buttons alluded to in the "advantages" section for those unfamiliar with them, are buttons you press to say go to the home ...
Advantages: Bright colours, Good size, Clear, Good design Disadvantages: Not a huge size, nothing else
So on top of the HPCompaqBusinessDesktopdc5100 - P4 640 I'm using is this HP monitor, a very clear, vibrant display showing exactly what it should. But first lets talk about it's design.
A simple 17 inch monitor, HP logo in the top centre, "HP 7540" bottom centre and below that are 4 buttons. "MENU" on the right, - (left centre), + (right centre) and "SELECT". Further right is an led indicator and the on/off button. See simple, ordinary standard sort of a layout, nothing too confusing or hard to handle, and even PC newbies should be able to handle it fine.
The display is definately a step up from yesterdays monitor, which looked blurry and merged colours together (though it may have been due to someone messing around with the display rather than the monitor outright). The colours are how they are supposed to be, no blurriness ...
