Hoorah! it is the one month anniversary since I purchased this laptop. So here is my (pretty much) expert opinion on how it has treated me.
Firstly, It is a solid purchase but only for very casual or business users. It is light and punches well above its weight in terms of performance but falls short in build quality, battery life (which quickly falls below the stated amount) & predicted overall lastability. I would not go as far as to say it is a bargain as most, even the lightest, users will suffer some small inconveniences which go beyond mere compromises. But is it near perfect for just the right user and relative to the alternatives in its price bracket seems to be a great choice.
If you will mainly be using microsoft office (word, powerpoint etc) for business related activities such as word processing, presentations, spreadsheets etc you will find the performance up to scratch. Small flaws can be expected with a budget laptop, but in my experience this laptop fares better than most in its price range(and those slightly above).
But a serious concern does exist and it is in the inclusion of Vista Premium. Vista is the latest operating system from Windows and it requires a lot of firepower in the processing and graphics department to run smoothly. Even business only users will occassionally be affected by this. Although its more demanding features can be turned off, this renders your desktop looking like that of Windows ninety-eight with only a little in the way of improved performance. Budget laptops can sound like elderly joggers as they strain and struggle to cope with intense activity. This strain occurs when a user wishes to run, for example, both itunes and photoshop at once while an anti-virus and torrent client runs in the background. If this sounds like you, you should consider plumping for a more powerful processor with higher RAM or at least buying another gig of RAM to be paired with this unit.
Another slight concern exists in that the build quality really isn't first rate, even for the price. If you are travelling with it alot you must purchase a quality padded case and be careful with it. I have chipped the right hand lower lip after a small drop (you will drop it too, trust me!).
All things considered, HP as a company make competitively priced laptops and this is no exception. It (just) delivers what it says on the box and with budget buying you can't argue with that. But please consider whether or not you really will only require basic functions before purchasing this as many of us will find ourselves wanting to use itunes and downloaders, even when we should just be doing our invoices and databases!
