*** Specification ***
The laptop which I purchased had the following specification:

*** Packaging ***
The laptop box was quite small considering the size of the laptop, but it seemed quite will protected against damage due to polystyrene blocks holding it in place. In the box was the laptop itself, the power supply, the battery and a pack containing the various manuals and leaflets.
The laptop had various protectors taped to it and wrapped around it, making the unpacking process a little tedious, but they protect the laptop during transit I assume, so it's for its own benefit.
*** Physical inspection ***
When I got the laptop out of the box, I was surprised about how light, yet sturdy it felt. The plain, black plastic looked dated on the images I had seen on the Internet, but it real life it looked rather smart and minimalistic. It may not be to everybody's taste, but I think it looks quite classy and different.
A major downside to this particular model is its lack of ports. I have been told that the slightly higher models boast more ports and gadgets like card slots, but the model which I bought was a little basic from this perspective.
On the left hand side, there were two PCMCIA slots, a mini-Firewire socket, a network socket, a modem socket, a VGA output and two USB 2.0 ports. I was a little sceptical at first about having the USB ports on the side of the laptop, but I do really like this now as it is extremely easy to connect USB devices. On the back, there were only two ports, one for the power cable and a standard Kensington lock slot. Similarly, the right hand side simply had a DVD-ROM drive, a microphone socket and a headphone socket.
*** Getting started ***
The laptop was supplied with a handy guide about how to get it up and running, along with a much duller manual explaining every part of the laptop. The quick start guide explained how to plug it in to the mains and activate the pre-installed operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
This process took me approximately ten minutes to complete, but would have probably taken a little longer without the guide. The laptop churned away for about ten more minutes whilst I made myself a coffee. When I returned, armed with my beverage, the laptop was on the desktop screen, ready for me to use.
*** Software ***
As with most computers, they come cluttered with unnecessary trial software, but this was not the case on this laptop. Pre-installed were some quite useful utilities for burning CDs and protecting the laptop against malware. These utilities along with more were shipped on a DVD disk, so they could easily be uninstalled and reinstalled at a later date if required.
*** Using the laptop ***
Firstly, every single component without exception was fantastic on the laptop.
I was only using the laptop for very basic word processing and spreadsheets, but the laptop still felt quite powerful out of the box, especially considering the price. It was quite limited with its 256 Mb of RAM, so I bought another 512 Mb stick for £20.00, which improved the performance no end. I never had any problems with the 40 Gb hard drive, which some people would have considered quite small. I don't see any reason why it couldn't be upgraded at a later stage, if required, with a larger one, although I never saw any need.
The 15" screen was quite large and bright. The brightness could be controlled using the F9 and F10 key. I never used the laptop for fast, intensive games so I am unable to comment about how it would cope under these situations, but I never had anything to moan about with this screen. The only thing I found wrong with the screen was that it had a very slight grey tinge to it, however this was never a major problem for me.
The touchpad was large, accurate and allowed the user to scroll by running their finger down the right hand edge. The left and right click buttons were soft and comfortable to use. My old Compaq laptops had small touchpads with hard buttons, so this was a great relief when I got this laptop. Similarly, the keyboard was sturdy and very comfortable to type on, which does make a massive difference when using the laptop for me.
Having owned several laptops before, I knew how awful laptop speakers generally are, so when I got this laptop, I was nothing less than astounded. The speakers in this laptop were definitely the best I had ever heard. They were rich, with plenty of bass and volume, which was very impressive for the size of the laptop.
Finally, the battery lasted about three to four hours depending on what I used the laptop for, which was very impressive. With the battery attached, the laptop was significantly heavier than it was without it, but it was still quite light and easy to carry.
*** Conclusion ***
This laptop was quite basic, however this was made up for with the excellent quality of the components and great durability. A RAM upgrade is definitely worth it and the laptop will begin to feel extremely powerful. This said, it was a fantastic laptop.

...design front, pretty typical of HP laptops its clean, simple and compact. Its a laptop with the design edge which just gives it that bit of sophistication exactly what you want nothing more nothing less.
The Screen
This could do with some improvement the lack of brightness on the screen makes the enviroment you choose to work in limited as in bright conditions the screen is difficult. On the other hand working in standard conditions in a normal ... ...player and some great little HP applications primarily aimed at improving security.
Battery
The Battery life on this laptop is Superb, I get 3 hours out of it without any problem with standard use. When i say standard I mean word processing with the internet application running in the background. This is a real plus point for this laptop as it gives the laptop its mobility. No one likes running to a power point every 1hr.

In past experience this has been a problem on TFT displays.
The processor - This particular model has a intel Celeron M 360 1.4 GHz. This might sound a bit under powered. However at no point has the laptop slowed down or felt sluggish. Because this is a M model of the Celeron it is especially made for laptops so it very good on battery life.

...warranty, repair went fine through HP until exactly nine months after it was fixed, the EXACT same problem happened AGAIN. Warranty had expired and HP customer service told me "buy a new laptop because it is approximately the same as the cost to replace the system board again!!!!! So I only recommend purchasing this laptop if you want to have the same problem repaired every nine months. I contacted HP over 23 times yet received no assistance, apology ... ...yet they stated my battery was "fine" and again refused to stand behind their faulty product. My experience has been so bad that I will NEVER purchase any HP product again. My suggestion is go with another company that cares about customer service and stands behind their products! ...

Overall a pretty good laptop, i got one very cheap a couple of years ago, and it is still going strong, although the very small RAM makes it very slow at times, and often freezes. It can take a very long time to start up, and isn't great for playing games on due to the small processor. Although this is listed as a business computer, it is in fact ideally suited to a student. It has a 1.6 Ghz Pentium M Centrino processor with 2 MB L2 cache. What this in fact means is that although 1.6 Ghz seems slightly slow in comparison to other products on the market, the extra cache means the computer can do more at once, such as running many programs at once. OK so as a signed up Dell man when I bought the HP lap top I was extremely impressed. For the price its a well made laptop excellent spec as far as 512MbRAM and 60Gb Harddrive works well hadles all the office programs thrown at it and would recommend this one to any cost aware person looking for a laptop that will keep pace.
Aside from a wish it was a wide screen my only niggle would be only 2 USB ports and being on the left hand side an external mouse has to stretch round if you are right handed like me but aside from these minor issues the price makes it a very attractive buy, full marks HP it seems to do what it says it should on the box/ ...
