Anyone who knows me knows of my love/hate relationship with hewlett packard. So far I've owned four laptops from them and only paid for one. Each one has been a replacement of the last due to on going technical difficulties or problems. Being an IT proffesional I demand the highest quality of service with my equipment and make HP jump through hoops.
To begin with, the laptop comes well packaged with an amazing array of CD's and DVD's. It comes pre-installed with windows XP proffessional (Which doesn't seem to require activation) and it runs smootly out of the box without the usual amount of rubbish HP installs on their products.
But I'm not here to review software - The laptop itself feels like a quality bit of kit. I spend all day on my laptop, and so far I've not noticed any stress on the plastic, it's virtually silent & even when the fan comes on, it's not noticeable. There's no floppy drive or serial port. That's fine until you need to format an older computer or update a palm or GPS (like me!) There's no wear on the plastic around the wrists or palms - the silver is completely in tact.
The mute button is an issue of mine. My old vt6200 had an instant hardware mute . This mute button waits for software to catch up which can be embarrising if you're trying to start it up in a lecture - you get half the windows chimes before you can stop it.
By far the biggest issue is the wireless card. It's great having one inbuilt. But unfortunately I'm not sure that mine is ok. I've not heard any other complaints from nx7010 users, but you never know. Basically it randomly drops the connection and reconnects. This is especially annoying during online gaming. Since my update of the firmware it's been happening less but it still happens about once every day.
All in all though, it's very reliable, quiet and cool. My laptop can be on my lap all day and feel barely warm on the bottom. It's good for travelling and seems quite rugged. I'd buy one if HP didn't give it to me for free!
