My replacement battery arrived with days of ordering it but when it was fitted it wouldn't hold a charge, not even enough to switch the machine on. I contacted HP by their web site but after sending five messages that they didn't reply to I contacted the UK office. My company presented me with a HP Compaq lap top for work use in May 2005 with the Windows XP operating system loaded on it & this is a tale of those two & half years of daily use. The cost at the time this lap top was on the market was £999.99. My first impression of this lap top was its weight, despite the figure of 3.5kg from HP it actually weighs over 5kg which for carrying around every day is quite heavy especially when you consider the weight of the power lead/adaptor etc to add to that.
The general finish is quite good with a decent keyboard & screen; it features three USB sockets, two at the rear & one on the side. On the left hand side of the lap top is a phone connection socket, socket for a 3G card & floppy drive. On the other side you have the CD/DVD drive, headphones & microphone sockets & one USB socket. On the rear of the lap top are the older style printer sockets, two USB sockets, power lead socket & what looks like two 'S Video' sockets.
From day one battery life was pretty good with about two hours from the battery, but six months after I first got it, HP announced a safety recall on the batteries. My replacement battery arrived with days of ordering it but when it was fitted it wouldn't hold a charge, not even enough to switch the machine on. I contacted HP by their web site but after sending five messages that they didn't reply to I contacted the UK office. They informed me to contact HP direct in the USA as the recall was being handled by them & despite no answers to five emails they would eventually reply.
Another five emails & another five ignored, I had to end up getting my company to threaten them with legal action before a replacement battery was sent, 10 months later!!! The battery they sent me would hold its charge for about 50 minutes; I guess HP supplied a new battery of inferior quality to the original to save money, now I am lucky to get 30 minutes use from it.
Whilst waiting for the first battery to arrive the two controls below the mouse pad stopped working & these were changed under warranty. They failed again just before the warranty expired & the current ones are playing up again, I think these must be a weak point in these lap tops. The screen stopped working (it went blank) & had to be replaced, the technician who replaced it told me that this is a common problem with these models. The power lead adaptor stopped working & this had to be replaced under warranty but it took HP nearly 14 days to send the replacement to me from the UK, when it arrived it had the USA electrical plug on it so I had to wait another two weeks for the proper replacement.
Now the CD Rom has stopped working & will need to be replaced, it the space of 30 months this machine has proved to be pretty unreliable considering that I do take care of it. I find HP's customer service non existent & although most items have been replaced under warranty the company drags its feet when you want decisions made regarding the warranty. Although I have a HP printer & HP PDA, the expierence with this lap top & the poor customer service would put me off ever buying another HP product. Recently when I purchased my own lap top I went for a Sony Vaio which has proved 100% reliable & very light to carry around.
Advantages: Reasonable priced, robust, good specifications Disadvantages: Heavy, side buttons spoil easily, slow start up
I bought this laptop early Jan 2004 with much regrets later as the intel centrino came just a few weeks later. Weighing at 3.5kg and with the dimensions of: Width 32.9 cm, Depth 27.2 cm, Height 4.9 cm, it is rather bulky and inconvenient to carry around. I dread bringing my laptop when i travel especially when i have transits because it is rather heavy. Usually, I would remove the battery (if i do not plan to use the laptop during the journey) and ... ...to reduce the burden on my shoulder.
This lap top has a slow start up and at first i thought it was due to the many programs i've installed. I've reformatted the computer but discovered that it still takes quite some time for startup.
A year after buying this laptop, the problems started to come. My side buttons controlling the infrared, and the volume control could no longer work suddenly. I did not do anything to it and until today, i've not ...

Advantages: factory installed and ready to use Disadvantages: a lot of useless drivers taking up space
...XP CD, but on here HP dont try to hide it and instead is on the C drive with everything else, which is much better.
Its very helpful having a floppy drive as many you have to buy externally, so great if you are at Uni or college and having to transfer a lot of work around. There are more spare sockets than I know what to do with!
Ive tested the battery and it ran for almost 3 hours which is far better than the estimate although with use I expect ... ...Cds, they've included backups of HP documentation library, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Windows XP driver recovery, Norton AntiVirus and Roxio Easy CD Creator. All of which are already installed so are only needed should you get a virus or mess up your computer yourself. If yu do, there was also a huge stack of manuals (most of which came in 21 languages) which double up as a coffee table! They are End user license agreement, Using ...

...not convinced. I will phone HP Tech Support and query this. Even at 1024, the text and graphics are not as crisp as they should be, in my opinion and comparing the same images on my old Dell. I have turned off font-smoothing (significant difference!), and updated the video drivers (more improvement), but its not as clear as it should be. Additionally, there is n o function to adjust the contrast of the screen. Brightness, yes. Contrast, no. Not good. ... ...processor, but this 2.8 GHz machine still runs slower than my old Dell with 0.8 GHz P3 processor and half the RAM. Additionally, I went online and discovered that the hard-drive speed is only 4200 rpm! I need to take this up with the shop I bought it from - they should have mentioned this! However, in their defence, Dell's Inspiron models also come with 4200 rpm HDDs, so perhaps this is an industry standard for laptop HDDs vs desktop HDDs? I don't ...

Advantages: Fast, reliable, easy to use, smart Disadvantages: Addictive
I am an ICT technician, so obviously I come accross so many different makes and models of pc and laptop. None has managed to impress me however, the way this stunning piece of divine technical engineering has done!
The Laptop has a very modern look to it. nicely finished in light and dark hues of gray and silver. Also 15" TFT Monitor display.
The mouse touchpad is very easy to use, and has a good feature if you knock the pad while typing. The pad ... ...above it. This enables the user to type without worryng about knocking the cursor elsewhere on the screen as I am capable of doing time and time again (extremely handy if you are a "wrist wrester" like many of my colleagues)
The keyboard is layed out standard 'qwertyuiop', and had the usual function keys (eg number pad, volume control, sleep bright/dark etc.).
The keybord is internet enabled, with shortcut buttons for mail, search, internet, computer ...

When I got my HP NX9010 Laptop in July 2004 I was really excited. Since then that has faded a little bit but I would still recommend it, and wouldn't swap mine.
The model I have is the HP nx9010 with 256MB of RAM (+ added 256MB) and a 2.66 GHz P4 processor. The graphics card is okay (ATI Radeon IGP 345M with 64MB of memory). I've been able to play some games (e.g. Hitman 2) without much of a problem. The newer games (e.g. Prince of Persia) take ... ...Basic specs for HP Compaq nx9010 series
