Why I chose this Laptop...
I would class myself as a power user. This is to say that I demand great performance in my job (IT Manager) ... ...pay for the repair at HP quoted as £393 + VAT! I find that totally unaffordable and have now contacted some alternative companies to do the repair.
All in all its a good workhorse and despite a few critisisms does a fair job for me. I have now put 8 Compaq laptops with the staff of differing styles and had nothing but good feedback about them. Ok, a few bits do go wrong but are easy to get replaced thans to their warranty scheme. more
This is my 2nd Compaq laptop that i have purchased in 4 years. The first one died after a couple of years of constant use and a few knocks and scrapes.

I chose HP (Compaq) because it was a respected and recognised brand and always found their repair and warranty sections easy to deal with.
Anyway, on with the laptop review. Why I chose this Laptop... I would class myself as a power user. This is to say that I demand great performance in my job (IT Manager) and i need long battery life for when im stuck in the server room or mobile for hours on end. The Centrino mobile Pentium M processor delivers this. However, claims of 4.5 hours are vastly overexaggerated. More like 3 on a normal usage cycle from full charge. Its a middle of the road laptop as far as weight goes but is quite slim for such a powerful machine. It is quite wide thanks to its large screen.
The 1Gb or memory that comes with it as standard means your laptop is more than equipped to deal with high demanding programs. For example, i build quite a few applications in .net. This puts a big drain on resources but its quite happy to chug along doing lots of other tasks at the same time.
The widescreen was a necessity to me. As i need maximum screen resolution for developing software (lots of windows open at once!) . This delivers it in abundance but does not quite have the same resolution as my old laptop despite it have the same sized screen.
One weakness of the NX8220 also appears to be the brightness of the screen. Even on its brightest setting it appears dull and dim and in certain lights appears almost unreadable (particularly sunlight). The screen also appears to have a matt texture to it which makes cleaning a nightmare. Get ready with those screen wipes!
The keyboard has a standard QWERTY layout with touch sensitive keys. The addition of the Blue Function key means many of the buttons have additional functionality for controlling Screen brightness, sleep mode, etc.
Connectivity is fabulous. It has 3 USB connectors built in for adding printers, memory sticks,etc. There is also a firewire port, an SD and SC card reader for uploading pictures directly form a memory card, built in modem, 1 Gigabit Network LAN connection, Microphone and Speaker Connection. You also have the ability to connect it up to an external monitor via the VGA out socket or the S-Video connector.
However my recommendation to you if you intend to use it at your desk a lot is to buy the Advanced Port Replicator to go with it. The laptop simply connects directly onto it and clips into place. This allows you to keep the lid shut and use it like a Desktop PC.
The laptop comes with built in Wireless functionality with is great for working wirelessly at home. It also has a DVD writer built in for cutting CDs and DVDs. One thing i do like is the Mouse. Its a 'Finger drag' pad as opposed to those little centre keyboard nobbles that i can never get on with. Its responsive and accurate.
Durability. Ive had mine for about a year and its starting to show a few knocks and scrapes. Firstly the screen is getting marked by the 2 rubber 'Feet' that are used to cushion the screen when closed. It leaves 2 annoying marks on screen that you cant shift. The small piece of plastic between the lights on the front has snapped off although this does not affect the workings of the laptop. The Casing towards the read has also cracked thanks to being droppped. However the laptop continues to work.
A few things i have replaced are the Hard Drive, Battery and power pack. It came with a 40Gb hard drive and this started to fail recently. Funnily enough the same thing happened to my old laptop so i think its a common problem with Compaqs. I also bought another power supply as the first one stopped charging the battery. The Battery was replaced under the warranty as it was deemed to be faulty.
!!!UPDATE 06/11/2007!!!!!! Right, i got to tell you about the latest problem i am suffering from. The power pin right inthe centre of the adapter hole has snapped off from the laptop! Not good. I have no way to charge it from the adapter. Therfore the only way to recharge the battery is to leave it on the docking station at work. To use it at home, I now need another docking station (£150) or pay for the repair at HP quoted as £393 + VAT! I find that totally unaffordable and have now contacted some alternative companies to do the repair.

Pricing is not the cheapest when it comes to buying a laptop. I paid around £800 for it when it was purchased and you can buy 2 laptops for that price now. However they are unlikely to be as feature packed or well reknowned in the market as Compaq.

The Nx8220 is made for people who need a little bit more power than everyone else. That is just what it gives, easily handling Photoshop, Flash which are applications which generally demand a lot of processing power.
It has a build in SD slot and the keyboard buttons require just the right amount of pressure. Other useful features include a button to disable the wireless device, one for presentation mode, a 10/100 network card & modem. Finally the ... ...so if it accidently gets splashed (i've done it with a good bit of cola) the internals will not fry.
The true greatness of this laptop lies in two factors, you turn it on and it works without crashing & that it comes with a full restore cd, so that if you have any accidents you'll be able to set it up without having to call a technicial.
Finally it's got up to 4hrs on battery & i reckon i've managed to do that using just word, obviously it lasts ...

I didn't actually get to pick this laptop myself as it was supplied to me via my insurance company to replace a broken one, however although being a great performing laptop I probably would not have picked it myself.
My first impressions of the laptop was "it looks dull and boring", it is just black. After using the laptop for a while though I started to warm to it more, it has everything you could possibly want, a fast Intel centrino processor, ... ...a 15.4" widescreen.
It seems to handle everything I throw at it including 3D games no problem at all, as long as it isn't running on battery power. For some reason it doesn't like playing 3D games while on battery power, while other application run fine. Having said that though the battery will happily power the laptop for approx 3-4 hours.
I have had this laptop now for about 2 months and over all I am very pleased with it, even if it isn't the ...

I have been using an HP NX8220 1.86gHz, 1GB Ram, 80GB for the past year now, for personal and business use.
It is a very reliable computer, with swift processing (until I loaded Windows Vista). The dimensions and weight is perfect for true mobile computer - I'm often seen around the office carrying my computer around as a palm top. Definitely light enough.
The most impressive feature of the HP Notebooks I've used thus far, including this one, is ... ...it's not the stylish looking case - it beats any other computer I've seen before in regular use, for neatness due to non-scratching.
The keyboard is a little clunky, but responsive - and allows for fast typing.
The computer has no built in microphone - which isn't the greatest loss, considering the quality of most built in microphones - and the speaker sound is great - I often watch movies on my laptop with friends with more than adequate sound ...

This is a fantastic laptop. DVD/RW is very handy. Built in wireless also is very good for home use. The feature to automatically turn off wireless when an ethernet connection is detected is great for switching between home (wireless) and office (ethernet) without tweaking any settings each time.
Speed and performance is very good....only problem I've had is the occasional hanging of the system. I get a long beep then it freezes for 10 seconds before ...

I have had no problems with this laptop in the 10 months I have had it. I have installed as much software as i require and the performance is excellent. The screen makes images look very sharp and in my opinion is much clearer than a standard laptop screen. Sound is excellent. I use my laptop for editing photo's in high resolution and it does not struggle at all.
The laptop has a very stylish look and many people have comented on this. As the laptop ... ...high resolution pictures and over 13 gb of music with plenty of room for more. It is very easy to use the shortcut buttons are very useful and the mouse pad is good although i still prefer a mouse. I like the fact that I can play music or dvd's without having to power up all the unnecessary software. the laptop can be used as just a dvd media player. ...
