Advantages: Superb Screen, excellent spec, what a performer! Disadvantages: Would have liked XP Professional as standard

The price was comparable to a similar spec Dell at £845. This left me enough to buy the long desired wireless router.

The R4000 is a pretty beast and caught my eye immediately. It is designed for people who want the sheer power of a desktop PC with portability.
We flitted around the store (my wife and I) changing the wallpapers on all the laptops to check out the quality of the screen. Also we opened Internet Explorer on each machine to see how quickly it would open. The R4000 won on both counts.
The price was comparable to a similar spec Dell at £845. This left me enough to buy the long desired wireless router.
The laptop is very well packaged. All the accessories, discs etc were placed in a separate smaller box with the laptop.
The R4000 looks fabulous and is amazingly rugged - I found some of its competitors to feel flimsy in comparison.
It is coloured black with a silver Compaq logo. The inside is somewhat different and it is nearly totally silver. It is very eye-catching.
The dimensions 14.25" (W) x 10.96" (L w/out hinge) to 11.18" (L w/hinge) x 1.8" (H Front) to 1.88"(H Rear) and it weighs in at about 7.9 lbs.
It is wireless enabled so it 'found' my new router with ease and set-up was a breeze.
I use it all over the house and garden. Works superbly and the seemingly high weight is not a problem or hindrance at all.
Batteries last around 150 minutes. And that is with Internet connected and DVD running!
The R4000 is well cooled and ventilated. It does not seem to run as hot as my old Toshiba.
The 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen (1280x800) is superb. No complaints at all. Watching DVD's is a joy - much better than the DVD player plugged into my TV!
The speakers and very good and very clear. Plenty of available volume.
I love the volume control. Three hotkey buttons for up, down and mute. These are SO useful.
The DVD burner was an unexpected bonus. I have not used it to burn DVD's yet so cannot comment.
Loads of ports to please everyone.
Firewire Headphones Mic Video-out (s-video) VGA port for monitor Modem port Ethernet port. Expansion Port 2 Four USB ports
Also a media card reader, which can read: Memory Stick Memory Stick Pro SmartMedia Card Secure Digital (SD)/MMC XD-Picture Card ExpressCard/34 ExpressCard/54 Type I CardBus Type II CardBus
Windows XP Home SP2 is included as standard.
Also:
Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 (complementary 60 days) Notebook Help & Support Adobe Acrobat Reader Sonic RecordNow InterVideo WinDVD Microsoft Works
Overall this is a superb machine. Easy typing angle, sensitive (but not over sensitive) touch-pad. And of course the superb screen. I am very pleased. Sorry Dell, you have lost me forever!
I have had this laptop for nearly 2 years. I am overall very happy with the performance and spec of the laptop but i had exactly the same problem described by nickhow100. After about 8 months the screen started flickering ocassionally, but i thought nothing of it. Over the next few months the screen gradually got worse, to the point at which i had to hold and bend the screen by the side hinges to enable the picture to stabilize. Ultimately it got ... ...of colour and unviewable. I took off the screen and discovered the hinges problem. I lift one hinge up at the tip and instead of the base of the hinge moving with it, it stays rooted, thus probably causing pressure damage to the screen and resulting in it breaking. Unfortunately i was just out of warranty so a replacement would have cost me in excess of £160. A silly amount to pay when i have an external monitor.
I have operated the laptop with ...

Quick review of HP Compaq Presario R4000 series
THIS IS MY OLD LAPTOP , MY NEW ONE'S A SAMSUNG R70
I STILL USE THIS LAPTOP OCCASIONALY PLUGGED INTO MY 42" SAMSUNG PLASMA DISPLAY , IT LOOKS GREAT !!
THIS LAPTOP WAS VERY GOOD UNTILL FIRSTLY THE SCREEN HINGES BROKE AND THEN LATER THE SCREEN CRACKED!!
THE HINGES THEMSELFS SEEM QUALITY MADE BUT THE PLASTIC BITS ON THEM AND WHAT THEY GO INTO IS VERY POORLY MADE!!
THE KEYBOARD HAS SURVIVED WELL AND THE LAPTOP ITSELF STILL FUNCTIONS ((MINUS A SCREEN LOL )))
I RECOMEND THIS LAPTOP IS YOU ARE GOING TO BE VERY,VERY CAREFULL WITH THE SCREEN AND SHUTING/OPENING THE LID !!
THE PROCESSOR AS AN AMD AND NOT EXACTLY THE BEST NOW BUT WORKS WELL AL THE SAME !!
THE CD/DVD DRIVE DOES ITS JOB!!
PERSONALY I WOULD NOT BUY A COMPAQ AGAIN THO UNLESS THEY CHANGE THE SCREEN HINGES DESIGHN!!
SO ,,, RECOMENDED FOR A BASIC LAPTOP BUT NOT RECOMENDED FOR DURABILITY ...

Advantages: Good performing laptop at a good price Disadvantages: Battery life not so long
I bought this laptop as a replacement for a desktop computer that took up too much space, and with Windows ME was a real pain. I have never regretted the change. I now have a lot more space on my desk, I can take the computer with me and it does everything I want very well.
The screen is good, at 15.4 inches it gives lots of room, even for working with graphics and drawing programs it's acceptable. The graphics card makes the manipulation of images ... ...graphics program called Sketchup where putting a few too many trees in the scene caused some speed problems. The 1 gigabyte of memory is great for graphics work, including movie editing.
For applications such as email and word processing, the programs open rapidly and do everything they should.
The AMD processor (Athlon 2500 64bit) makes the price of the computer very competitive, but don't think you're getting something less than excellent - it ...
