The HP DeskJet 5550 prints at a steady pace. It is not exactly going to win the Grand Print Speed National. However, on the other hand it won't win the slow bike race. It is obviously depends on what you are printing off and the colour levels and detail involved. Printing word documents is fast and you can expect somewhere in the region of 15 pages a minute.

If you are looking for a printer just for home use, to print out school or business work or information from the internet, then this printer is ideal for you! It is quite wide so you need a fairly large space to store it and sometimes it can be quite temperamental and annoying to use (or maybe that's just me!)
Looks and Size
The printer looks very stylish, with a slick space-age curve. It is very aesthetically pleasing and is definitely a printer that you would like to show off. It measures about 18" wide, 14" deep and 8" high. It is quite wide and therefore needs a lot of room to be stored. Ours fits quite nicely into our computer desk but if you don't have much room (horizontally) then you would probably be best ensuring that it will fit in before you buy it!

It is obviously depends on what you are printing off and the colour levels and detail involved. Printing word documents is fast and you can expect somewhere in the region of 15 pages a minute.
Colour Sensitivity and Picture Quality
The output from the HP DeskJet 5550 is of a high standard and makes for nice quality printouts. The colours are sharp and there is quite a lot of sensitivity and range of colours. This is obviously dependent on you having enough ink in the printer! It can handle most complex images and is decent at printing off digital camera photographs. The images come out very realistically and are surprisingly good. In one photo that my Mum recently printed out of me, you can see the flashes' reflection on my sweaty forehead (lovely!). It is not as good as getting your photos printed out at a Kodak machine, but the with the correct photo paper and a full ink cartridge, the HP DeskJet 5550 can deliver some stunning printed photos.
Ease of Installation and Use
Setting up the HP DeskJet 5550 is easy. It is connected to the PC via USB, and the installation disk and manual are very helpful. Unfortunately, this does not take into consideration my Dad, who decided to install the printer with the language set as Spanish. This left us rather puzzled initially, but after tinkering a bit, we managed to get it to English! Within a few minutes we were up and running smoothly. Using the printer is very simple and is operated by three buttons on the side - all clearly explained in the manual. Changing cartridges is also straightforward, even if it is a burden on the wallet!
Reliability
Our printer is still working well and we have not had any major problems with it. Occasionally I find that it does play up and pages can get stuck in the printer, but I'm probably to blame for being impatient. The rest of my family don't seem to have a problem and therefore as long as you treat it nicely, it will do the same back to you!
Conclusion
Overall this is a very good quality printer offering good value for money. It can deliver good performance, both in picture quality and colour sensitivity, but you may find it slow at printing colour images. It is ideal for general home use and offers good quality digital photo printouts (although I'd still get them done at a machine!). Easy to install and very reliable - the HP DeskJet 5550 is a great home printer!

...relatively modern deskjet printer. The HP 5550 has a decent size memory and specification, and also has interesting styling. People round here say these printers look a bit like a mini spaceship!

This printer has a decent sized memory of 8MB, which should be sufficient for most print jobs that are thrown at it! The print resolutions on this printer are pretty impressive. In black and white mode it will run at a maximum of 1200 x 1200 dpi, and in the ...

Advantages: Great Quality, Fairly Fast, Easy to set up Disadvantages: none
I have had this printer a while now and I hava had no problems with it whatsoever.
The best thing about it is the picture quality, on the highest setting (of which it has 4) the quality is easily photo quality when printed on photo paper. Even on the Normal or Everyday quality settings it is brilliant quality, perfect for my school work. Also, the lowest quality, Fast Draft, is just great for test printing work, pictures, or printing out information ... ...speed of the printer is very good as well, on the highest quality it takes a little while to print, but for the quality it is well worth the wait! But on Fast Draft is prints out pages ridiculously fast (not as fast as laser, but about as close as you can get!), and the printing head moves so fast it shakes my computer desk side to side!
The printer is also extremely easy to set up, all you do is plug it in, turn on your computer and it picks something ...

Advantages: Great price, picture printing quality Disadvantages: Steep prices for replacement ink cartridges.
...research and found that the HP 5550 would suit our needs just fine. There are so many pro's for the HP 5550 that I need to just make a list so it's easier to understand. Here goes: 1. The price of the printer. It was only 149.99. 2. The fantastic resolution quality. I get 4800x1200 dpi maximum resolution. 3. Both parallel and USB ports. 4. 8 MB of buffer memory. For those big documents that have tons of pages. 5. Convenient size of the printer. 6. ... ...a few cons to the HP 5550 that I have found as well: 1. Ink cartridges for the HP 5550 run a steeper price than other HP printers do. 2. The fact you need to buy the USB or parallel cable. Other thoughts With all the pictures I print and the use that the HP 5550 goes through on a daily basis, I have been very pleased with the performance. It does such a better quality job than my other printer did. It was well worth the small fortune I paid to get ...

...onto glossy paper. Hp also have a well round website at www.hp.com. Where you can be made aware of what is available for your printer.
One bad thing about the printer is the pricey cartridges (around £25). I find that each cartridge last about a year or longer. I would say that they last longer than previous one available on old HP printers. However I don’t pay for these so I am not so concerned by this.
I would say that this is a good price printer ... ...not to expensive to run as cartridges last along time and also the print produce high quality prints so it can be used of kids home work or business letters ect.

Advantages: Excellent Functionality In The Short Term Disadvantages: Ink's Too Expensive In The Long Term
The first thing to say about the HpDeskJet5550 is its 4,800 by 1,200 mode, that it's only available when printing high-resolution photos. The source images must be at least 1,200 dpi and printed on photographic paper. For other jobs with other paper types, such as Plain Paper or Transparency?s, the HP is a 1,200 by 1,200 dpi printer.
The second thing is that it doesn't really matter regarding what resolution the printer can print at. Just as today's PC graphics cards can display more colours than the human eye can see, today's inkjets' variable droplet sizes and resolution-enhancement schemes make the numbers race rather meaningless once past the four-figure resolution mark. This means that the 1200 dpi would hardly be noticeably different compared to 4800 dpi.
Ignore inkjets' advertised speeds too, the DeskJet5550 is rated ...

Advantages: Excellent quality prints (especially photos) and exceptional value for money Disadvantages: Too slow, expensive ink.
The HPDeskJet5550c is great value for money if you want photo quality prints. It does great prints and the colour is enhanced by the fact that it uses 6 colours to print with instead of the usual 3. I use mine to print, photos, documents, everyday text and various other things. All come out at great quality which makes this printer great value for money as far as the quality of prints goes.
However the bad points are that there are definatly faster printers out there and the ink is a little expensive.
The printing isn't particularly slow but it could be faster. However you get what you pay for. For a professional rapid printer you would defiantly pay more.
The ink is rather expensive as it comes in small catridges and you have to buy replacement catridges. There are no refills. this makes each print more expensive.
If ...
Advantages: Excellent value for such high print quality Disadvantages: Too new to have cheaper alternative sources for the ink cartridges
?s just that this is my first HP printer.
Likewise, there?s to be no peeking. With my Epson, I could lift the lid and peer at the slowly emerging image (very slowly at maximum definition). No such fun with the HP. Lifting the lid halts the machine but does no damage to the printing when replaced!
PICTURE QUALITY
Of course, with only my Epson to compare with, the HP5550 is excellent. There is no discernable trace of ?banding?, i.e. lines of print prominent mainly in large expanses of sky and sea, even with a magnifying glass. Colour using only the normal cartridges is excellent and to my eye, realistic. I wonder whether using the ?black bay? up for this extra Photo cartridge is justified, especially since this will mean that precious colour inks get used to make up a composite black when black is wanted.
One thing I do know ...
