The 6980 is a well built printer, but to get this level of quality, HP have had to compromise on size and weight. A hefty 6.4kg, and measuring 36.7 cm deep means most people will have to take advantage of the wireless capabilities and place it away from their computer.
HP have done well offering a wide range of connectivity options - WiFi, USB and ethernet results in a printer that can be used in both homes and businesses. At home, I have set the printer up for wireless printing. The process was relatively simple and the printer is available from all computers on my network once the drivers have been installed. PictBridge is also present allowing you to print from other devices.
With the standard ink, printing is to a high quality and exceptional results can be used when using photo paper - even on the "normal" print setting. On the "draft" options, printing is quick and still to an acceptable quality for letters and other documents. Large ink cartridges means that priting is cheap, and if you shop around for HP ink you can find some bargains. At this point I must mention the slow wireless connection times I notice when printing. After sending the print job, it can take up to 20 seconds for the 6980 to begin printing (802.11G standard wireless). This may be an isolated incident, but it has been occuring ever since my installation.
The printer accepts a wide range of media, and this means its easy to print your envelopes, labels, etc. There is sufficient room for 150 sheets of paper and this should be enough for most users. The Deskjet 6980 offers greater productivity and less waiting with speeds of up to 36 pages per minute (ppm) in black and 27 ppm in color.
A duplex unit came bundled with my printer and this is very useful for double sided printing. It is easily attached to the back of the printer but does protrude and takes up some extra space.
-----
Because of the positioning of my printer, the size does not really matter to me. This printer prints great quality, quickly and is cheap to run, making it a great all rounder.

I purchased one in June this year (now September). After 1 paper jam the system is completely dead. After lengthy communications with HP email support (less than helpful) they referred me to UK telephone support. Here they refused to help as the system was registered as having left the factory in 2006 and was therefore out of warranty. They then asked me to send a proof of purchase which I did and despite being told they would get straight back to me I am still waiting.
Now I am taking it back to the supplier but was not impressed by HP support.

From Day 1 the photo paper and envelope feed did not work. These have to be fed and coaxed into the printer by hand, and even then it won't work on most occasions. Extremely poor design.
It's OK for A4 size and standard printing, but useless for envelopes and 6 x 4 photos.
Very large and very heavy.
Print quality is OK but not much use when one cannot get the paper into the machine.
I'll never buy HP again.

Advantages: Bargain Disadvantages: Might not last long
...might change somewhat from one printer to another. I wouldn't worry about it too much though because I think manufacturer support will help if needed.
HP Deskjet 6980 is relatively easy to use, you do not need to spend the whole day going through the manual and internet boards. ...
