I am actually astonished! I bought myself a printer last week, fully expecting it to still be in its box and me in tears three weeks later, BUT I DID IT! Get me! Firstly I had to avoid the evil men in the shop trying to baffle me with the rubbish they were spouting (all men do it lets be honest!) Then once home I managed to plug it in and install it within the hour! I was totally amazed and now deserve a big sticker for achievement! No more going down the library to print off my skating forms! No men involved at any point. Up for the girlies!!
This printer came from Toys 'r' us. It was £29.99 which was about the same as they were on the internet so a good price. The USB cable is not included so this would bump up the price a bit if you didn't have one at home. Also included are two 3ml cartridges one colour and the other black, these hold less than the normal cartridges which are 5ml but contain enough to get you going. Replacement cartridges are around £11.99 each so I'm hoping they last a while.
+ Print Quality +
All I really need the printer to do is black and white and the odd colour picture the kids create on paint so I went for the cheapest printer I could find whilst being a decent brand. This is an inkjet printer, which means very little to me actually but it sounds good! I already have a photo printer so I won't be making much use of the photo printing capacity although it does do borderless photos. So for me the most important thing was that it could print in black, clearly and quite fast. This printer is ideal for me, the print is clear, fast and easy to use. It can print 16 pages a minute in black and 12 a minute in colour.
+ Ease of Use +
The paper goes in fine, no twisting. The paper guide is easy to use and doesn't get caught unlike in my last printer. It really is as simple as pushing print on the screen and out it comes. There is only the one button on the printer, which turns it on and that really is all I ever need so that's fab. The cartridges need a good push to get them in and they needed aligning but that was easy and all the instructions came up on screen to tell you how to do it all. The results after that were great, clear, dark print.
+ Installation +
Again this was so easy, a disc was included in the box and it took you through the installation process. You did need to restart once, which was a nuisance but you can't really avoid that. The whole installation took about an hour, the bar on screen showed the progress but it was annoyingly slow, you had to stay by the PC while it did this as it prompted you to do or agree to things along the way. It was however easy enough and got the job done. The user manual was straightforward and only told you how to install the printer, everything else was on the disc. Which is the same as most other things these days. Ideal for me, less paper to clutter up the house anyway.
+ Looks +
I was first attracted to this printer by its sleek look, it is quite narrow and round. It fits nicely on my desk unlike the last great lump that was there (no I don't mean the ex-boyfriend!) The paper tray is nice and sturdy and holds 80 sheets which is plenty for me. The maximum paper size is A4.
This printer is cheap, and it works. The kids are happy colouring in their cbeebies pages I have printed off and I'm happy that I can print out my simple documents at home. This printer was made for me, and not a big office or the heavier user. I normally stick to the most basic functions on anything technical and this really does everything I need it to do. What more could I want?
Advantages: Lightweight, easy to use and simple design Disadvantages: A bit clunky, front loading, no USB cable supplied
...behold, I finished on the HP Deskjet D1360, which cost me £39.99 and has cartridges available which cost £13.99 and £16.99 respectively for the black and colour cartridges. It does come supplied with two cartridges - one black and one colour.
And so, the nitty-gritty:
The printer can be used with Windows 98 SE or anything newer, on a computer which has at least 64Mb of RAM, a 233MHz processor, 200Mb of free hard disk space, a 16bit colour SVGA ... ...as well as the standard HP printing style and Windows extensions, HP Photosmart, a program which allows the user to carry out basic editing functions and adjust colour balance and light levels on digital photos. Installation took approximately 4 minutes, followed by a restart, but was very easy and almost entirely automated.
Fitting the cartridges is simple and involves lifting the front cover, which swings freely upwards, and clipping the two separate ...

Advantages: Easy set-up, lightweight, Simple design Disadvantages: No USB cable, Loud whilst printing
...weeks later I came across HP DeskJet D1360 in the new Argos catalogue, being quite fed up by now I gave in and purchased this printer. Six months on from then and I must say I have found it extremely useful and trustworthy. D1360 is perfect for anyone who just wants a simple printer no fancy bits and bobs, you can end up going out and spending a whole lot of money on a printer with lots of special settings…and fancy buttons…when all you really need ... ...the most basic of the range; also at the price of £39.99 it won't make a huge hole in your pocket, which buys it for me. Advantages:
I did find when I was reviewing this printer that there were definitely more advantages to it than disadvantages. The most important advantage at the top of my list had to be easy quick set-up; personally it only took me 15 minutes at the most to set up, the step-by-step illustrated instructions included with the printer ...

Advantages: Low purchase price, reasonably good quality Disadvantages: Low capacity cartridges soon run out, occasional incorrect "out of paper" error
This is the third HP Deskjet printer that I've owned.
My first, a black-and-white Deskjet 500 in 1990, lasted 10 years.
My second one, a colour Deskjet 930C in 2000, lasted 6 years.
Then I got this one. I'm about ready to throw it away after 12 months
Good points
Reasonably good print quality at first, with smoother gradients and better skin tones in photos that the 930C.
It's fast enough for my needs - I just leave it going and come back later.
... ...This makes them poor value for money when you start to notice how often they run out...
Sometimes, if an "out of paper" error occurs, restarting the computer is the only cure - annoying, and not something I've ever experienced with other printers.
High capacity refilled cartridges gave muddy photos and seemed to "block up" after a few weeks... not good value! ...
