Well, my computer is now 6 months old and boy has it been used.....It came complete with a scanner, speakers, several programmes and a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 840c printer which is what I intend to write about today.
At £84.25 this has been a fantastic buy. The printer is compact, neat and extremely quiet when running(making more of a gentle hum than the roaring sound usually associated with a lot of printers). It certainly compares well with the larger and more expensive printer I use in work which is noisy and unpredictable (also a Hewlett Packard but a more expensive and older version). It comes complete with both colour and ink cartridges and has a one year guarantee.
The machine uses two separate cartridges, one for black print and a separate colour cartridge. I find this far better than my work model which takes one cartridge to do all jobs. I therefore only have to refill the black cartridge whilst the colour one lasts far longer. At £24.99 per cartridge this can work out rather expensive, although I have to say I haven't shopped around to see if I can find replacement cartridges cheaper elsewhere. The same colour ink cartridge can be used for both graphics and photos to save the user from the bother of having to change them constantly. Changing the cartridges is a doddle. The old one is merely clicked out and the new one clicked in as replacement
I have to say the results are extremely good. Photographs are reproduced clearly and with true colour even on inferior quality paper. On top quality paper of course the results are admirable. It is possible to tune the colours manually, although I have to say I haven't tried to do this yet, but apparently the colour can be changed from muted to vivid whichever is preferable or from dark to bright. The blurb with the machine says it uses Photo Ret 11 colour layering technology. I'm sure a lot of people will know what that is......all I know is I'm happy with the results.
On testing the output I would say it does about 8 pages per minute in black print and around 4/5 in colour. The ink is fast drying and smudge resistant. Again this compares favourably with my work printer where letters are often spoiled because one letter lands on top of another that is still wet several minutes after being printed.
Paper is loaded from the front and the tray takes roughly l00 A4 sheets at a time, although personally I don't load it up to this extent. The paper tray itself is quite solid, again unlike my work model which is thin and delicate.
The printer is easy to set up, merely being plugged in and is compatible with Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000 and MS DOS applications. It has a 2MB memory and all in all is a very competent piece of equipment at a more than reasonable price.
There are the usual facilities for printing in either draft or normal. I find the draft printing admirable and again it compares well with my work model. In normal (best) mode it prints out at about 25 seconds and takes roughly half that time in draft.
Measuring 185 x 446 x 355mm (H x W x D) the machine is average sized and does take up quite some room on the workdesk, but is no larger than most other models. The design is rounded which gives it a quite pleasing look and the colour of the printer is the usual standard pale grey.
I'm hoping to set up work from home so my print outs have to be good. Certainly to date I have absolutely no regrets about purchasing my Hewlett Packard Deskjet 840c.
Advantages: Cheap to run, extremely quick, very good quality, better than the competition. Disadvantages: Slightly large footprint.
...to me choosing a second HP printer. The control panel allows easy maintenance of the printer including cartridge head cleaning, testing and re-alignment as well as a utility for checking the printer connection or printing a sample page. The re-alignment facility is excellent for ensuring high print quality without wasting ink. Three print qualities can be used: Draft, standard and high. Draft quality is extremely economical on ink and extremely quick ... ...looking to produce particularly high quality images high is best. It is a little heavier on ink and takes longer, but the improvement is noticeable. Changing the varius modes is performed through the software and takes nothing more than the click of a button. ...idea? Yes, that's right, the HP 840C inkjet is a pretty good printer that should keep most users happy. It's not the best on the market, but for the price I doubt it could be beaten on quality and reliability. So why is it so good. Well firstly it from the well established Hewlett Packard, who seem to have become the most popular company for printers. I've never owned anything else, and when I use quality products like this one, I know why. First ... ...a pretty accurate claim by HP from my use of it. The specified 5 pages a minute in colour is a bit optimistic though. I've found that if they've got a little bit of colour on then you can expect about 3 or 4 pages a minute, but if you've got a full colour page, then you'll only get about 1 and half pages a minute. It is pretty quiet though, which is an advantage, though on the shelf unit mine is one it does tend to shake it a bit, just like my older ...

Hewlett Packard’s 840c is a well priced high quality printer which is well suited for home and office use. The printer itself looks tidy and because of its trademark Hewlett Packard design, doesn’t take up the space required by other brands due to their paper trays.
The printer is USB compatible which means you can plug it into your PC when it’s switched on. Installation is a bit of a fuss, when I installed the driver software it installed the French ... ...to be performed manually.
The 840c is very well priced from around £60-80 now, however it isn’t a cheap printer to run. Hewlett Packard ink cartridges are notoriously expensive, retailing around the £25 mark on the high street, Epson cartridges are significantly cheaper. Considering the price premium, you’d expect the cartridges to last longer than other brand printers, but they don’t.
Although the printer isn’t particularly fast, its no slouch, ...

Advantages: prints up to 8 pages in black and white in a minute Disadvantages: its a bit big
The HP DeskJet 840c printer has been around for quite a while now but I bought my HP DeskJet 840c about a year ago with my new computer for about eighty-eight pounds and I think it is an excellent printer, which has done my family and me good to this day.
We chose this printer mainly for my sister who was studying A-level photography then and needed a good photo quality printer to help her along her course.
The HP DeskJet 840c printer has a resolution ... ...and very noisy.
The HP DeskJet 840c printer is about the same size as an A 3 piece of paper and is rectangular shaped, its corners are neither sphere shaped nor right angles.
I thought the colour ink cartridge did not last very long even though I had not used it that much and the ink had a very strange weird smell to it, but the black ink cartridge lasted for the longest and I also used it a lot more than the colour ink cartridge. Apart from the ...

Advantages: Quick, reliable Disadvantages: Cartridges could cost a bit!
The HP Deskjet 840c printer has been around for a while but has recently dropped in price due to newer models being produced. You can now find the printer selling on the high street for under £100 and could possibly find it on sale in some stores. I know someone who recently got one for around £60-70.

The printer has a resolution of 600x1200dpi which gives a very good, sharp photo quality print. But if you just want to print out those letters in plain ink, it speeds along and produces just as good results.
The printer is dual cartridge which basically means if you don’t have any colour in your document it will only use the black but if you have a black and colour document it will ...

We had this printer for some years now and I thought I'd write a review about it. When we bought the printer, it cost us ?150, which is £100. Now you can buy these printers second hand on Ebay starting at £5 upwards.
The DeskJet840c is made by Hewlett Packard, which is a popular company for printers but they also make cameras, PCs, scanners, etc. The 840c is an ink-jet printer and is meant for personal use and not business use. There are a lot of other HPDeskJet printers that would be better than this one for using in the workplace. For example, HPDeskJet 9800d or the HPDeskJet 1100 series.
Onto general information about the printer. It's an off white colour, s 45.7 cm x 17.8 cm x 35.6 cm and weighs 5.7kg. It prints in black & white and also in colour.
It has three buttons to the right hand side ...

Advantages: Extremely quick, cheap to run, very good image quality. Disadvantages: Slightly large footprint, some may prefer bonus software.
Prior to purchasing my own Hewlett PackardDeskJet840C I ran a DeskJet 693C with an older computer and was thoroughly impressed with it. When it came to choosing a new printer to take to University with me I once again opted for a Hewlett Packard product and am not sorry I did. When making the choice I weighed the HP840C against two other options at similar prices: The Epson Stylus 670 and Canon?s BJC-1000.
The HP840C boasts an impressive maximum resolution of 600x1200 dots per inch and produces very crisp images. High-colour graphics are vibrantly colourful with good definition between different shades of very similar colours. Crucially yellow on a white background is picked out far better on this printer than on most others. Standard text prints extremely well in whatever colour you pick.
In image quality and resolution ...

I bought the HPDeskjet840C about 18 months ago, for £65 (inc VAT) from one of the stationery superstores. I wanted a printer that would be quick and reliable for uni work, but could do more 'fun stuff' as well.
It was very easy to install, with a choice of USB, or parallel (?) port to plug it into. I chose the port, as I didn't have enough USB slots spare. It came with installation CD, but to be honest, I haven't knowingly used anything that came on it.
The printer itself is quite quick, and the print quality is very good, with no lines, and comes out dry enough that you can't accidentally smudge it. The photo quality printing is very good, and the draft quality is good enough for letters, coursework etc...
I've only used proper HP cartridges with it, and find these are cheapest from the internet, rather than high street ...
