Manufacturer's product description
The HP Integrity rx6600 Server is a highly expandable platform for workload consolidation and virtualization that redefines the entry class. This next-generation HP Integrity server is capable of handling the demanding workloads previously possible only with larger, more costly systems. The HP Integrity rx6600 Server is ideally suited for application and database deployments in enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, billing, business intelligence and enterprise application integration. Its excellent Java, transaction, and online analytical processing (OLAP) performance distinguishes it from other entry-class servers and sets a new standard for the amount of work that can be accomplished with a 4-processor/8-core system. The HP Integrity rx6600 Server's balanced architecture is built around the innovative HP zx2 Chipset and is combined with the powerful new Intel Itanium 2 processor. Together, they deliver greater scalability and performance - along with higher levels of availability - than previously found in entry-level servers.

Advantages: Slimline, only takes a few U's in the Rack. very reliable. Disadvantages: The new HP Smartstart is not as easy to understand as the original version.
...For those of you who aren't aware HP have taken over Compaq and rebadged compaq Servers with the HP badge.
This is just an upgrade to the Compaq Proliant DL380 G2.
You are still getting one of the most reliable servers in the industry for the right price.
They have also rectified the problem on the last model where there was only 4 bays for hard disks , there are now 6 bays, a FDD and a CD drive.
The server is a slimline model and for those of you who rack their servers, this is ideal as it only takes a few U in the rack.
I have built several of these without any real problems and all have been stable once built.
The only critisimn I can make is that Smartstart, a compaq utility to assist you in building these servers, has been rebadged, HP smartstart and given an overall and so far im not impressed, the screens don't flow...

Advantages: The managability of Proliants is second to none Disadvantages: Accountants will try to make you buy cheaper
...I have worked with servers for 6 years now and have never found any manufacturer of servers the comes close to the HP/Compaq Proliant range. What sets Proliants apart from the rest of the field is the managability tools that HP provide.
The DL740 comes from the density optimized line, this means that there are some sacrafices that are made to package the server smaller. DL servers don't typically have many hard disk slots as the low end servers DL360 etc are normally used for infrastructure services and the high end DL580, DL740 for SAN attached functions such as databases, or file servers, they also typically don't have as many PCI slots as the ML range.
********** Specification*************
The DL740 is the top end of the DL range and will accept either 4 or 8 Intel Zeon processors ranging from 2.0GHz to 3.0GHz , the server comes...
