Advantages: Slimline, only takes a few U's in the Rack. very reliable.
Disadvantages: The new HP Smartstart is not as easy to understand as the original version.

...For those of you who aren't aware HP have taken over Compaq and rebadged compaq Servers with the HP badge. This is just an upgrade to the Compaq Proliant DL380 G2. You are still getting one of the most reliable servers in the industry for the right price. They have also rectified the problem on the last model where there was only 4 bays for hard disks , there are now 6 bays, a FDD and a CD drive. The server is a slimline model and for those of you who rack their servers, this is ideal as it only takes a few U in the rack. I have built several of these without any real problems and all have been stable once built. The only critisimn I can make is that Smartstart, a compaq utility to assist you in building these servers, has been rebadged, HP smartstart and given an overall and so far im not impressed, the screens don't flow... Advantages: The managability of Proliants is second to none
Disadvantages: Accountants will try to make you buy cheaper

...I have worked with servers for 6 years now and have never found any manufacturer of servers the comes close to the HP/Compaq Proliant range. What sets Proliants apart from the rest of the field is the managability tools that HP provide. The DL740 comes from the density optimized line, this means that there are some sacrafices that are made to package the server smaller.
