Also known as the Color Pocket PC, this is by far HP's best attempt at a mass-market hand-held to date. Previous PDAs from the company - with the exception of the earlier colour Jornada 420 - have been large, clunky affairs, sporting loads of features but no style. This is different, and could be the machine to finally push Windows CE, in its Pocket PC form, into the mainstream. It actually looks a lot like the Palm Vx; it's a bit bigger and noticeably heavier (more than twice as heavy, in fact), but has the same style of vertical screen - although this one boasts full colour - and casing and pen stylus. That screen is something of a revelation. Using what Microsoft calls ClearType, it has anti-aliased fonts that make it easy to read electronic books and other documents. This really seems to work; you wouldn't want to stare at it for hours, but it's better than most. Other innovative features abound in this device. For example, connection to the host PC is via a USB port, which is considerably faster than the usual serial interface used by such machines (conveniently, the machine also has a serial port should users require it). IrDA is provided too. And the Jornada 545 has the ability to play MP3 and WMM music files, through a headphone socket, although users will probably need to upgrade their memory using the CompactFlash port to make the most of this feature. Powered by a 133MHz Hitachi processor (which shows how efficient the Palm and Psion operating systems are in comparison with Windows CE), with 16MB of ROM and 16MB of RAM, the Jornada 545 has the usual option of hand-writing recognition - which works reasonably well - or an on-screen keyboard, and is powered by a built-in rechargeable Li-Ion battery. Verdict We were impressed by the Jornada 545; considerably more than we have been by any other Windows CE device so far. It may be heavier and bigger than most PDAs, but the colour screen, MP3 playback and USB connection go some way to offsetting that. It's not quite as sexy as a Palm Vx, but it's close.
