HP LaserJet 1010 Printer
Printing is a huge part of my life. Studying at university right now makes for lots and lots of printouts. Whether it is lecture notes, essays or hundreds of pages of journals, my printing needs are massive. My inkjet just could not cope with the amount of work I needed to churn out, so I headed to my friend at The Computer Shop to get a great printer.
When I would use my inkjet, each black cartridge ... ...to get good printer paper. HP has a line of laser printer paper, which does the job well. It is heavier paper, and so does not curl up with the heat of the laser.
This printer’s resolution is 600 dpi x 600 dpi, which is sufficient for business documents, reports, and even black and white graphics, such as charts and graphs. It is very satisfactory for my needs.
When I would use my inkjet, each black cartridge would set me back around £15, and would only last me a couple of weeks. This was costing so much money, and also the ink would come off in my hands from the printed sheets of paper. Not the best thing to happen, especially when handing in an important essay. Laser printers sounded wonderful, but I had the idea that the price would be amazingly high. It turns out that I was wrong.
LOOKS COUNT
My printer is a sleek one, and is a stylish dark grey and light grey. For a laser printer, it is very compact, and sits neatly on my desk, taking up about 23cm x 21cm desk space. The paper feeder comes out of the front, at the bottom, and you can fit around 150 sheets in that. There is also a separate envelope feeder, which is so handy. It makes printing envelopes a breeze. Printouts come out at the top of the machine. It is a lovely looking printer, and adds a touch of class to my bedroom office.
WHY LASER
Inkjets are fantastic for colour printouts, and when you need eye-catching documents printed. The impact of a photo or illustration printed out with ink is unbeatable, and that is where the main use of those particular printers is visible. However, it is not cost-efficient, or speedy. It takes perhaps 10 times longer for an inkjet printer to produce one page of text than a laser, and will cost so much more.
Laser printers work in a complex way. Through static electricity (like that you get on clothes out the tumble dryer), toner (which is fine powder) is fused onto the fibres of the paper. Because no ink is used, the laser is much more precise when reproducing text, and therefore you get a much clearer printout. Toner is relatively cheap to replace, when you consider the amount of pages you will get from one purchase.
QUALITY
When it comes to text, the quality is amazing. Each line of text comes out crisp, and will not smudge, since no ink is used. Laser beams are much more precise than squirting ink onto a page, so you can be assured of great results. All of my essays come out looking professional, and I have no worries about the ink coming off on the marker’s hands. The only thing is, because the paper goes through such a hot process whilst printing, regular paper will come out curled. This is not good for professional work. Therefore, it is essential to get good printer paper.
EASE OF USE
Installing the printer was simple, just place the CD in your computer, and then connect the printer. It will be up and running within five minutes. The printer will then spit out a test page, so you can see it in action.
The printer has “Instant On” technology, so there is no warm up time. This is fantastic, so that when I need something printed, I hit the “On” switch, and it is ready to print. Print speed is tremendous, with the rate of 12 pages per minute. Just what I need!
Envelopes are a breeze to print on as well. There is a separate feeder for envelopes, with an easy to use size guide. You place the envelope in, tighten the two grips at each side of the envelope, and then it is ready to be printed on. Envelopes come out well, and look very professional.
Another easy feature is the double sided printing function. If you want to save on paper, just select Manual Double Sided Printing, and an on-screen guide will tell you exactly how to position the paper back in the tray, to be feeded through again. It works every time with me! Before, if I tried it with inkjets, I would have both pages printed on one side. Not too good!
RUNNING COSTS
The amazing thing about a laser printer is the amount of sheets you can print with one toner. A toner can print around 2000 pages, however if you use the Toner Saver mode, you can extend this even further. And just remember, that would be enough toner to print on four reams of paper – fantastic!
A new toner cartridge will cost you around £40, which may seem a lot, but considering the amount of pages you get from it, it is well worth it. Believe me, I have probably managed to get around 200 pages from one inkjet cartridge, and that cost me £15. It soon mounts up! It really is very economical, especially if you have a lot of printing needs.
PRICE
Expect to pay just £99 for this printer. I was lucky enough to know a friend who works in the store where I bought it, and received discount. Still, at £99, it is a great price for a laser printer from a well known and reliable company.
A new toner is around £40, but lasts a long time.
CONNECTIVITY
The printer connects to your computer by USB. It should be noted that this cable is not supplied with the printer, and will set you back around £5. This seems to be pretty standard these days, and is the one thing I dislike about buying a printer. Still, it doesn’t bump up the price too much.
CONCLUSION
This printer is a gem, and extremely reliable. It’s been working non stop for me for a year now, and I could not be happier. Reports are never smudged, and everything looks great. It could not be cheaper to run, considering I have not even had to replace the toner yet, after a year’s intensive use. HP is a company I trust, and always bring out quality printers. Their laser printers are no exception, and I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for an economical and fast way to print out black and white documents.

Since the purchase of our computer back in 2001, which came with an colour Inkjet printer, we thought it was the bees knees. Until you start to add up the cost of the refills. Anyway the Inkjet gave up the ghost recently, and since we mainly printed either web pages or letters, felt it wasn't worth while getting another Inkjet.
After searching websites and doing our own comparisons, based on cost, performance and refill cost, we found that the Hewlett ... ...print anyway). We placed our order (@ £76.98 inc p&p) and the printer arrived promptly.
The setup instructions for the printer are simple to follow, along with the CD-Rom setup disc for the computer.
I was a bit miffed that the USB cable was not supplied, but the cable from the defunked Inkjet was kept fortunately.
(Hint: Never throw away things that might come in use for something else sometime in the future, usually after you've thrown it out.)

Advantages: Good Prints, Fast, No Warmup Time Disadvantages: Non Refilable Toner Cartridge, Prone to Jam
In my companies front counter we used to have an old samsung laser printer, the main good things about it was that the cartridge was unscrewable so the toner could be refilled and it gave good prints but the downside was that it takes almost 30 seconds to warm up before you can print, and thats everytime if you leave it idle for more than a minute. Because of this the boss bought the HP1010 printer.
To start with it was great, quality was outstanding, ... ...We tried some thicker paper, which we had used in the samsung fine, in it to make better invoices but it kept jamming every couple of prints, so we went back to normal paper but it still jams, only every 4-8 prints!!!
We also found out the only way to refil the cartridge was to cut a hole into the reservoir as you can guess it didn't work very well so it was back to buying new cartridges.
Good printer for home users or small business but i don't ...

The HPLaserJet 1020 is a simple and compact black and white laser printer from HP. It superseded the LaserJet1010, 1012, 1018 model s but as it has been out for quite a while, has itself been superseded by the LaserJet 1022 and maybe the LaserJet P1006 models, although mine is still going strong. The printer chassis has two shades of light greys and the body is quite curvy. It is small enough to fit in a book shelf, which is where I have mine. The trays stick out when extended but I fold up the paper feed tray when not in use. It only measures 370 x 242 x 209 mm so is probably one of the most compact laser printers you can get. I originally bought mine from Amazon for £45, which was an excellent deal but this printer usually sells for £60 - £100.
