To make things easier (hopefully), I've broken down my review into some main points to help emphasize what I feel is important.
Printing Speed and Quality
This little guy can really fly through the print jobs. I think that the speed of the HP Laserjet 1100a is the main selling point since it can throw out about 15 pages per minute! It doesn't quite reach this speed on normal or best mode printing, but it will still beat just about any other laser printer in it's class (especially at this price!). The quality of text and graphics are also quite impressive. In best mode, the LJ1100a can put out 1200 DPI quality graphics! Of course it's only black and white printing, but for anyone who is in the market for a low-cost laser printer for their home or office that will give great performance and quality, then definitely check this guy out.
Installation
I had to give installation it's own category because I couldn't believe how easy it was. I used both the parallel interface for the PC, and the USB interface for both the PC and Mac. Either way, software installation was quick and painless with very little room for any errors. All a person basically has to do is plug the data cable into the printer, then into the computer, and install the software without even worrying.
The one thing I will say that was a little strange was the place in which I had to plug in the parallel or USB cable. In order to connect either one, you have to take the entire side panel off, plug the cable in, and make sure you guide the cable through the hole that it is supposed to be in. Which I can see as useful in one way since it makes it harder for a cable to be accidentally pulled out, but they could have made it just a tad easier.
Other Interesting Things
This unit has a nice feature called Instant On Fuser, which allows for MUCH quicker warm-up times. HP Says that from the time you turn on the printer to the time it prints will only take about 10 seconds. I haven't really tested that fact out, but after letting the printer sit in standby mode for quite some time, it takes hardly any time at all for it to wake up and begin printing. Quite a good feature to have in a busy office, especially first thing in the morning and after lunch.
Finally; Memory. The LJ1100a has 8 MB built in but can handle a maximum of 64 MB with the addition of a single memory module. I was sort of disappointed that there was only one memory expansion slot, but then again, 8 MB is not that bad for a standard office printer. If a person needed more memory than that, then chances are they would probably need a more expensive printer anyway. But the expansion slot is available none the less.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: Print speed, quality, upgradability, price, reliability, quite small, easy to print on envelopes/small paper, Works under Windows XP Disadvantages: Square design, 4MB memory not enough for some image printing, supplied drivers not excellent
