In the space of one year I have been given two of these marvellous machines. As a freebie I can't really complain at the job it does.
There are however reasons for the recieval of two free printers of this same type. The Pickup Rollers. These are unfortunately the first thing to go on these printers. Usually after about 30,000 prints but it can be more or less depending on how intense the usage is. On the one I got, they had gone after 16,000. (It is only about 4 months old) Which shows how much they pumped through it.
The pickup rollers are about £5-£10 and will take you five minutes to fix, it even shows you how in the manual.
The 1100 series is not really an office machine and is intended more for moderate home users, such as myself.
That said the trueprint at 600dpi and the stylish sweeping front, allow it to look good, whilst making what you print look good too. It has a 125 sheet capacity holder which is more than enough for you to run off and leave it printing your documents for some time.
The printer feeds out to a lower hole which can let the documents fall onto a tray or desk, or they can return out of the top in a similar way to that which they go in. The first page is out fairly quickly and the rest not long after.
The cartridges for these printers will cost about £20 and should give a good 5-10,000 prints (depending on what you are printing) 5% per page and all that rubbish. Plus most the time you can get non-manufacturers cartridges on buy one get one free. Double trouble!!!!
Who prints only 5% per page I ask????
The interface lead is where things get slightly tricky. The 1100 series uses a condensed parallel slot on the back of the printer, this means that if you should lose the lead you get with it, or like me you were given the printer without it, then you will have to buy one. Not only are they ridiculously hard to get hold of but if you don't know where to shop it will cost you up to £25 for the cable. This said I got mine for a fiver.
Overall a full bundle of joy that is quite happy to work with any platform you want to run it on. For quality and cost of running, you can't knock HP for this one.
I can't tell you how much it cost, because i didn't pay for mine. But I think they are about £100.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
HP Laserjets are among the top leaders in the printer market if not already at the top. Known for quality and effience but are expensive to buy and then to maintain. Gavvy

Lucky you, getting it free! Cheers. Christina ;-) x
Advantages: Print speed, quality, upgradability, price, reliability, quite small, easy to print on envelopes/small paper, Works under Windows XP Disadvantages: Square design, 4MB memory not enough for some image printing, supplied drivers not excellent
