We have an HP in our office at the moment that is 10 years old and still going strong, never needed anything doing except ... ...I went for the HP.
It's a nice looking machine, quiet in operation, fast printing and economical. It's also quite a nice size for home use, doesn't take up much room being only 23.6 inches deep (with rear output tray extended) and 10 inches high.

Before buying I did a lot of research and found that, although a bit more expensive than your average printer of this specification, from past experience buying them for the office and home, I have found HP printers to be extremely reliable and they just keep on going. We have an HP in our office at the moment that is 10 years old and still going strong, never needed anything doing except a bit of cleaning - so based on it's pedigree, I went for the HP.
It's a nice looking machine, quiet in operation, fast printing and economical. It's also quite a nice size for home use, doesn't take up much room being only 23.6 inches deep (with rear output tray extended) and 10 inches high.
Print quality is second to none, 1200 dpi is highly recommended and worth with price difference. This printer outputs at 1200 dpi as standard, and manages print speeds at 17 pages per minute with A4 prints. The printer always outputs the first page in less than 10 seconds.The A4 tray can hold 250 sheets, half a ream of paper, so can handle the biggest printing jobs without having to keep topping it up! The printer output tray (where the printed pages come out) can hold up to 125 sheets before the printer stops and waits for you to remove them before continuing with the print job. This helps to eliminate paper jams and also overflowing printed pages spilling out onto the floor!
The printer also has a 10 sheet 'priority tray' which, when paper inserted into, will override the standard A4 paper tray and print on the sheets in the 'priority tray' instead.
The printer has 8Mb RAM, which is more than capable of storing and handling pending print jobs for everyday printing.
Set up is easy. You can either connect this printer to a spare USB port, or a parallel one. Remember to buy a USB cable (unless you already have one from your previous printer) as this model doesn't come with one as standard. Printer drivers are obviously included on a CD, which again are easy to install and straight forward. Drivers are supplied for Windows 98, Me, 2000 and XP.
Online support is always good with HP. Any information you require, including updated drivers, manuals etc. are always available for download.
This printer has a recommended monthly life cycle of, on average 1000 sheets, with a maximum recommended output of 10,000 sheets per month. A standard toner cartridge can print up to 2500 sheets before needing to be replaced. These can be purchased for around £30 + VAT. A toner cartridge is supplied with the printer. The printer has an Economode function for printing with less toner, and also apparently has an 'N-Up' function, which will allow you to print multiple pages on just one sheet of A4! (although I haven't tried this yet myself!!!)
Overall, I'm really pleased with it. Good value for money, if you want to buy a brand that will go on working for years!
