Hewlett Packard are a major brand in the PC world. They provide fantastic range of equipment and you are always guaranteed a reliable service from them. Their range includes Desktop PC's, Notebooks & Handheld Devices, Monitors, Printing & Multifunction (e.g. Fax, Copiers & Scanners) and Digital Photography.
Design -----------
The overall look of the printer is that it's square in shape and is very angular unlike some of the newer curvier printers. It features a small LED screen on the top of the printer that displays the printers mode and any error messages. Underneath the screen is a large green oval button and a few other buttons that takes you to the menu and other settings.
Paper ---------
On the front of the printer there is a large tray on the bottom where all the paper is stored. The printer can only take A4 paper and it can not be any thicker than 80gsm which is the standard thickness of normal paper. If you put any thin card into the printer it will cause a jam inside the printer.
You can tell how much paper is in the printer by just looking at the tray as there is an indicator that tells you how much paper there is. I find this quite useful as I can see just by looking that there will be enough paper to do my printing before I press the print button.
Above the paper tray there is a fold out tray that you can pull out and you can manually feed paper in to print on. I use this when I am printing letters on to our headed paper. The printer takes the paper from just that tray when it is pulled down.
As well as printing on paper, you can print on to envelopes. If you pull the manual feeder tray down it indicates where you should put your envelopes to print on. If you design your address on the templates in word it will print your address on the envelope.
This printer can only do black ink printing so it is ideal for just printing of reports and letters. It does a really good job of printing in bulk. As it is a LaserJet it prints very quickly and the quality stays consistently good even when you are printing large diagrams
Quality ---------
For the speed it produces your prints it gives exceptionally good quality prints. There is no lines or fading when printing a large amounts.
Ink -----
As it is a LaserJet printer it has one big cartridge instead of fiddly little ink cartridges. They are expensive to buy but they do last a very long time. I find that it will last easily 6 to 9 months with frequent use, but this will obviously depend on how much you use it and what you are printing. I find that I have to replace the colour cartridges so many times and I always find that the ink can smudge on the paper, where as this LaserJet, there is no smudging or fading. Before the toner runs out, the screen will tell you that the toner is low and you should replace it as soon as possible in order to maintain the quality of the prints. But I find that it will last for another month until the print quality starts to decrease.
If you print something that is in colour to this printer it will print it in grey scale.
It is very easy to replace the toner. Simply pull down the manual feeder tray, they open the top flap and you will be able to see the toner. There is a ridge in the plastic of the toner which you grab and tug and it will slide out. To put in the new one, simply take the new toner out of its packaging, remove all the red tags and then slide in at a slight angle and push it in until you here a click and it's in. The toner only fits in one way so you will know that it's in correctly. The printer will take a few minutes to load the toner and then it's ready to start printing again.
Ease of use -----------------
I find this printer one of the easiest to use. I didn't have any involvement in the setting up of the printer as it is networked to many other printers in the office. You get all the software with it to help you install the printer.
Options and settings -----------------------------
there are many different printing options you can use and you can select these from your pc. Once your printer has been set up on your pc, you will find the printer icon in the start menu. If you right click the icon it will come up with printer preferences. These include options such as:
* Choosing between portrait or landscape printing
* The page order (either from front to back or back to front),
* You can choose how many pages you want to print on each piece of paper (this is ideal for showing a whole document at a glance so you can check that the layout looks how you want it to without having to print the whole document out)
Overall this is a great printer for either home or office as it keeps on printing at great quality with practically no maintenance from you.
This printer has been discontinued now and has been replaced by newer versions. However you can still buy these from places such as computer fairs and ebay.

...It is an Hewlett Packard HP 4000TN! Whereas, the Brother is for small office and home use, this beast is definitely designed for medium to large office use. It is ethernet capable which allows it to be used by a network of computer users. I have run several HP printers, and have never been disappointed. So, when I purchased this one from a man running his own computer business company, I knew somewhat to expect. Page after page of quality printing ... ...a computer company specializing in HP machines. Having said that, I have not encountered any major problems. I know of one person who commented that they found difficulties only in the print process and that it seemed to be cutting off the bottom of the page. I have not found this problem.
As it is an older machine, it does run off a parallel port. It comes with a folddown tray in the front allowing easy access for sheets or labels or envelopes ...

Advantages: Reliable, network support, printing in bulk Disadvantages: installation not for the weak
The HP LaserJet 4000n is the 'networked' version of the HP LaserJet 4000, meaning it has an extra card installed to connect to local area networks. Connecting the printer is relatively easy if you already have a home / business network, you just connect it to an unused hub-port. The standard 4000n NIC supports both DHCP and static IP. The HP LaserJet 4000n is an extremely reliable printer, once installed it will work forever and at low operating ... ...to your local hub. However, HP has an excellent helpdesk that provides free and excellent support to LaserJet users in most European countries.
As the LaserJet 4000 is no longer produced by HP, most available products will be sold second-hand. Note, however, that this printer is extremely trustworthy and getting it cheap and used may be an excellent deal if you are planning to use it regulary.
I reccomend this product *strongly* for home users ...

Advantages: Quick, reliable and good quality Disadvantages: Old now and only black and white
I have one of these as my printer and work, and have used the same model for many years.
The printer does look dated now to be honest, as it is an older design, but it looks functional and has an LCD screen on the top of the printer that shows the menus and error messages.
Below the screen is a green button to turn the printer on and offline and a couple of other buttons to navigate the simple to use menu.
This is an A4 printer so will only print ... ...and the manual feed. There is an indicator on the outside of the paper tray to show how much paper is in the printer without removing the tray - very useful!
As this is only a mono laser printer, naturally it only prints in black and white, it is very quick to print and the quality is very good.
This printer is very easy to use, changing the cartridge is really easy too!
So in summary, a good printer not manufactured anymore - but parts and consumables ...

First things first: the HP LaserJet 4000 is one of the most reliable laser printers I have ever worked with. It is built solidly with a sizable drawer for paper. -- SUITABLE FOR --
If you're looking for a second-hand printer, the HPLaserJet4000n is generally good for home environments, especially those where a family has to share study space: it doesn't take up too much room on a desk, and the fact that the paper comes out the top means that you won't have your nice smooth copies smudging each other or spilling onto the floor. The HPLaserJet4000n may also have a role to play in small business, but only if your company has a LAN connection (which many small businesses do not).

Well, I have just read Richards review and I cannot disagree more! Richard, you said you hadn't had time to fully determine the total effectiveness of the printer, well now it's a couple of months down the line, come back and let us know what you think!
I work for an IT out sourcing company and we support the IT requirements of many medium to large corporations - one of which had just ordered a range of HP 2500n and HP 3500n printers throughout their UK offices (about 20 offices in total).
We recommended the newer HP range as the company have used the old 4000 series LaserJet for years, and the staff are pretty familiar with them. Upon the first installation of a 2500n last year, we went ahead and popped one onto the network to backup their existing monochrome laser printer.
Because of the large amount of users, we setup ...
