Whereas, the Brother is for small office and home use, this beast is definitely designed for medium to large office use. It is ethernet capable which allows it to be used by a network of computer users. I have run several HP printers, and have never been disappointed. So, when I purchased this one from a man running his own computer business company, I knew somewhat to expect. Page after page of quality printing being punched out by the ream.
For some technical information:
Speed and Print Quality As I said, it is designed for medium to large office use as it is definitely a high volume office machine. The maximum resolution is 1200dpi and it prints at 17ppm. In power saving mode, it still powers back on and prints the first page within the space of less than 15 seconds. While it is monochrome only, the quality that is produced in transferring photo images to black/white format is precise and does not blur. It is quite flexible. It comes with 8MB RAM as standard and has a 100MHZ processor.
Tech Support As this machine is no longer manufactured, I cannot state what kind of tech support would be available. I would have to assume that it would only be available from a computer company specializing in HP machines. Having said that, I have not encountered any major problems. I know of one person who commented that they found difficulties only in the print process and that it seemed to be cutting off the bottom of the page. I have not found this problem.
As it is an older machine, it does run off a parallel port. It comes with a folddown tray in the front allowing easy access for sheets or labels or envelopes to be fed in. This top feeder tray will hold up to 100 sheets or 10 envelopes. The second tray will hold 500 sheets of standard 80 gram paper. It does support A4 and legal size. The third tray will hold 250 sheets. As far as worktop space needed, all trays are internal and the approximate size is 18 inches deep including space for the parallel cable out the back and 16 inches wide.
Consummable Info Considering the high cost of toner cartridges and what you normally get for it, this machine is not really expensive. It takes one cartridge which is an HP4127A or HP4127X. I do know that there are compatible cartridges available. The price ranges from £35 for a compatible producing 6000+ copies to £70 for an HP4127X that produces 10,000+ copies.
Final thoughts I am not displeased in anyway with my huge machine. While a refurbished machine of this size will run from £250-400 on the open market, I feel that it is well worth the price. The length of life they offer and the quality would make me go out and search for another one IF this one were to ever give up the ghost.
I just think it's a crying shame that it is no longer on the market as a new machine!
