Our office has just purchased one of these new laser printers and my first impression are of an excellent, fast printer ideal for networking.
---------- SPEED ----------
Firstly the speed was what struck me; the first page arrives out of the printer within 10 seconds and the printer prints at a rate of 33 pages per minute thereafter. These are exceptional speeds, considering my home laser (the Epson EPL 5700L) has print speeds of just 8 pages per min.
------------ QUALITY ------------
The quality is also good, with 1200 dpi resolution, you don't have to compromise speed for quality either; you can still get a 1200 dpi output on the printerstop speed. This is a black and white printer however which is worth considering; as with
many of the more basic laser printers. Even black and white photographs or pictures are of a good quality; a weak point of many laser printers. This makes the printer ideal for businesses.
The printer is very powerful and not only in terms of speed. It has 48MB RAM making it ideal for printing long documents, and this memory means that any interruptions (such as computer jams or if the printer gets turned of) means that the printer will automatically print the document the next time it is turned on.
-------------------- EASE OF USE --------------------
Its also very easy to use; there's a panel of well indicated buttons which allow you to cancel jobs or pause printing. There are LED indicators which flash when the printer is ready or if the printer needs "attention."
Its use is made even simpler by the ease of loading paper, it even has sensors which detect the paper size, the trays are easy to load. The printer comes with a 500 sheet loader, however you can purchase further ones to add on which would allow you to maximise the paper capacity. A 2,600-sheet input capacity is available and various duplexers for two-sided printing. Another product which is available is the stapler/stacker which quite self explanatory stacks and staples sheets as they come out of the printer; although expect to pay more for such features.
The instruction manual was easy to use and packed with information, the troubleshooting section is particularly helpful, assisting any difficulties you might have with the printer; all though as of yet we have had no difficulties. This really is a reliable printer; although I wouldn't like to speak too soon; we've only had it under a month!
Its also ideal for networking; we've got about ten computers in the office and we've managed to develop a suitable network which means each computer can use the printer but also access settings to change resolutions and print size etc. The network was also very easy to connect up; a few leads and we were off. This was pleasing considering the great deal of hassle we'd experienced before in networking other printers.
The design of the printer is okay, is with all laser printers its just another beige box but hp have tried to liven its appearance up a little by the curvious lines and the black access panel with coloured buttons. At the end of the day though, its a printer, so who cares what it looks like!?
---------- PRICE ----------
The price of the printer varies considerably, to buy the printer alone they are as little as £300. However to buy the printer with the extras and networking capabilities the price can be as high as £600, ours was £500 with extra sheet feeders and a good stock of consumables. The toners cost about £70 each, which is quite expensive considering that many epsonlaser toners are in the region of £40 - £50. The output is high however, you'll get a lot of pages out of it for that one of payment of £70. If all you need is the printer alone then you'll get a bargain at £300, and even these models come with a network card making networking possible. However to actually set up the network (including all the leads etc and HP server) be willing to double that budget.
In relation to other printers; its fair to say that black and white laser printer certainly have come down in price; the recent Samsung models are only £70 or £80 each however offer low speeds of just ten pages per minute; these are ideal for the home office but not for businesses. and course you have to consider this when purchasing; what will you be using the printer for? Colour laser printers start at about £800 and up to £2000 networked, so your obviously getting value for money in that respect, I wouldn't expect anyone to pay £2000 for a networked B and W printer; when they could get a colour networked one at £2000, it goes without saying.
-------------- OVERALL --------------
Overall the HP laserjet 4200 successfully meets all the requirements of contemporary businesses; its fast, offers excellent quality, is very easy to use and has everything one would want from a printer. The toners are quite highly priced and it may cost a lot to start with if your considering having it networked; but considering that the toners last a long time (or so hp say) and offer 33 pages per minute; then I think its worth the money.
A very good overall buy, would recommend.
