In today's busy workspace quite often time means money. Thus, you are expecting your work to be done in shortest possible time and with the least amount of inconvenience to you (if any).
The above holds true when it comes to a printing office needs as well. You want to complete your project in a shortest possible timeframe, without experiencing any down time or without having to frequently reload paper to your printer.
The HP LaserJet 8100 Laser Printer promises just that. A speedy and fully automated and reliable printing solution for all your printing related office needs.
With speeds of up to 32 pages per minute and a wide variety of formats supported (Envelopes, Labels, Paper (Standard Cut Sheet), Transparencies and a full sized Sheet - US Ledger/Tabloid (11" x 17"), you will find this printer quite useful for a wide variety of printing projects.
As far as the printing quality is concerned, you will be amazed as to what clarity and sharpness comes from this printer (supporting up to 1200 x 1200 DPI full monochrome laser quality printing). Furthermore, accepting a wide range of operating systems (IBM OS/2, Macintosh OS, Microsoft Windows 3.x, Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows NT 3.5x, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, UNIX, DOS and Sun Solaris (Unspecified Version)) you will find this printer quite adaptable to a wide variety of office environments.
The printer comes pre installed with 16 MB of onboard RAM (expendable to a 192 MB) which is more than enough to hold and handle even a most demanding print job you might run into. The standard tray holds up to 1100 pages of paper with the option of purchasing a second paper tray /input assembly that will hold up to additional 2000 pages (will cost you approximately additional $ 700 or so depending where you buy it).
The toner cartridge (maximum toner capacity cartridge is highly recommended) will print up to 20 000 pages (based on 5% page coverage in the economy or toner saver mode) and is priced quite competitively at about an average $ 160.00 or less (depending where you shop for it).
The printer is connected to the computer using Parallel - 36 pin Centronics (IEEE 1284B)(no USB or direct Network Printing Support). The drivers and installation manuals that come supplied with it are, furthermore, quite simple to use and install, thus ensuring that you will be up and running with a minimum time needed for a set up and installation.
As far as reliability and quality of the workmanship that went into design and manufacturing process for this printer, I am glad to say that this is an excellent product. I have rarely seen any down time (if ever) due to the poor paper handling (paper jams) or any other related malfunction. When properly maintained (as prescribed by HP) this unit functions flawlessly.
However, if you ever need any service work done on this unit, you'll be glad to know that this unit comes with one year on -site parts and labor manufacturer's warranty. You might also want to explore the possibility of obtaining an extended warranty (through either HP or the place where you purchased your unit), since this unit is quite large in size ( 22" height, 22" width and 21" depth and weighing 113 pounds without the toner and paper loaded). This indeed is not as heavy as some other HP printers, but you might not want to carry something this heavy from your office to the repair shop if you need service work done on it.
As far as support is concerned, I have not had any major complaints from my clients either. The unit comes with a toll free 800-support number by HP where you can find answers to most common issues you might run with the printer. However, like I said previously, since this is quite excellent unit, you might find that you do not need to do anything (the unit will break down and require service and support rarely if ever), but is good to know that the help and support are only a phone call away if you ever need one.
Combined all together, if you are looking for a high speed high capacity laser solution (without the network support or if you already have a dedicated print server hooked up to a network and are looking for a supporting high speed and capacity laser printer), than you should definitely look into this model. I guarantee you, you will be happy with its performance and reliability (as many of my clients who purchased this unit from me were).

If you are interested in getting the idea as far as the cost of this unit, I would suggest visiting any of internet retailers and comparing costs there. The computer equipment prices are volatile and changing, thus a fixed price here would only be misleading to you as it might not reflect what the equipment would be worth two weeks from today. To get a general idea as to how much this unit would cost I would recommend visiting Pricegrabber at www.pricegrabber.com, where you can get updated pricing from several established e-vendors.

I myself have limited knowledge of computers and printers, but found this model easy to install and even easier to use. The instruction manual comes well illustrated in a variety of languages. The test prints available are again easy to perform and demonstate fairly well the quality of print , range and depth of colour. I did however find that when fingered immediately the ink tended to smudge, but this could be avoided if left to sit for 10 - 20 seconds. The printer was amazingly fast, which perhaps was the reason for this.
For any problems however there was a clear list of manufacturer support available via email, phone and fax. I tried the phone line which did however appear to be relatively busy taking me three to five minutes to speak to...

...All of the HPlaser printers are special; nobody can match their efficacy and quality. There’s nothing that does black and white printing better but be careful not to but their inkjet!! This printer is economical to use and good for printing anything both personal and commercial work. It is the best and most value in the laser printer ranges at the movement. I would recommend this printer for any job to any body since I thought about buying one I’ve had nothing but quality out of this machine. It’s the definition of fantastic, purely brilliant and brilliant value so far. Do look at the new stuff though this may be quite old by the time you read it and things are getting better fast. Good Luck...
