To include a few: Dropping it from my table, spilling coffee on my monitor and keyboard and a Cd blew up, Yep! actually blew up wrecking my DVD drive (Thanks for the album Ric, it was explosive) but still, my computer sits here as a replacement to Mr Laptop. Sorry, but IConnect I am using you.
Last Year in April I bought the computer for £749.99 from PCworld, not really a bad deal and as they were on offer, I decided it wouldnt be a rip to upgrade the 15" monitor to a slightly bigger 17" monitor in for an extra £50 making a total of £799.99. Before purchasing I asked the usual about expandability, hard drive, USB ports and about the option to upgrade graphics in future and indeed this computer either already had or could hold these in future. The PCWorld man said, "If you want to upgrade your graphics card it will HAVE to be one with an AGP interface" which I later found wasn't true in the slightest.
Anyways, the computer came with the follwing vital statistics:
Specification **********
Duron 800 Mhz Processor (With 100 Mhz FSB - For the people who wanna know) 64 megabytes PC 133 Memory 8 Megabytes Shared AGP Graphics Acceleration (Can be changed up to 64 megabytes) Seagate, 20 Gigabyte, 5400 RPM Hard Disk Drive 17" A 726 Monitor, with 20 watt Monitor Mounted speakers 8 Speed DVD Drive 8x 8x 24x Cd Rewriter Drive 56Kbps Modem 4 USB ports (2 at the front) Windows Millenium Nice Green coulor coded tower and monitor plates.
Included Software **************
Windows ME (Millenium Edition) Microsoft Word 2000 Microsoft Works Rally Championship 2000 Rayman 2 3D Activ Doc
First Go ******
First thing after turning on my computer I saw the "Create Master CD" option on screen, this is Packard Bells way of saving money, and instead of providing you with a Windows ME Installation CD and Booklet, they make you create your own CD's using the CD writer. Only ingredients needed were 3 blank Cd-R's and 1 Hour of my time to create them. After all was done, the partition of the drive that had all the restore files on appeared with 3.1 gigabytes of space on it, I decided this was for all my MP3's.
Games *****
Straight Away I wanted to play games, this computer came with Rally Championship 2000 to play with. It ran alright but I noticed that it struggled sometimes. So upgrade number one was a 128 Megabyte stick of memory, but at my local and trusty Microdirect I decided to buy two 128 megabyte sticks as it was only £24.68 in total. I opened the case to find the motherboard only had 2 Dimm memory slots, (maybe a slight downfall) one occupied with the 64 Meg module, I removed this one and placed in the two 128Mb modules. This upgrade was instantly noticeable, no longer did Windows Me struggle, but now it meant that Rally Championship ran like a dream. Now I also set higher shared video memory to 32 Megabytes that allowed me to run games like Unreal Tournament in 800 by 600 resolution or 1024 by 800 resolution without any hassle all without a separate graphics card.
Later on a few months after I dug out an old, but working Voodoo 3 3000 graphics card, so i stuck it in the machine hoping for an easy setup. BUT, it wouldn't output to the monitor. A few days of messing I emerged victorious, I had to go into the BIOS and set it to output from a PCI graphics card and not an AGP one.All very simple to me, but for someone that didnt have any know how, Packard Bell would have charged an arm and a leg for someone to come around and put in the extra hardware.
And just beofre the new year I got broadband, another PCI slot was taken up. Installation was easily doen due to the fact that I could just unscrew 2 screws and slide off the side panel for easy access to the motherboard, drives etc..
GAMING MACHINE? ****************
Well, the fact is that i cost £25 for the memory, and it would normally set you back less that £20 for a used Voodoo 3000. So overall for gaming it wasnt too bad, the first instances of me really getting into a bit of online gaming was just me being a host for Championship Manager and all my mates joining in. My computer handled it all very well and the extra load of an extra 6 players didn't cause a massive slow down.
CLOCKING *********
Now men will always want more speed an example faster cars, and for me the computer can always run faster.
Simple as it may seem, changing a few jumpers or drawing pencil lines or your motherboard can speed up your processor, but this same process could leave your computer a pile of smouldering plastic. To put it frankly the Duron in my computer ran well at 900 mhz without a problem, and I guess with a bit more heating, from a bigger faster fan, you could get up to 1Ghz without to much trouble. Just don't cry when your insurance doesn't pay out because the owner is an idiot.
Support ******
Packard Bell offer the same 9 months repair service as with most of their products. One such instant I needed this was when my mate leant me a CD, I wont mention who it was, oh! ok then, it was britney spears, lol. Anyway this CD decided to blow up in my DVD drive, this took out the lens and meant that the drive was rendered useless. I phoned the support desk and within 5 days a computer repair man came round and replaced the drive. It was replaced to my suprise, with a 16 speed Hitachi Drive which meant I now had a drive double the speed of the one that my computer came equipped with.
Expand ******
This computer's case and motherboard can accept the following:
1x AGP graphics card 3x PCI cards 1 AMR modem 512 megabytes of ram (2x256mb) 2 Hard Drive Bays
So as you can see, future space for all your needs. Maybe a AGP Video accelerator, a modem in the AMR slot, and network card in a PCI slot. That way you still have 2 remaining PCI slots for TV Cards, SCSI Card etc ...
Music *****
This computer derinatley blasts out a fair old tune, and (I think) the output is close to 15 - 20 Watts. They also have a 3D sound button to add atmosphere to watching you DVD's, playing games...
Everythings all rosy and USB **********************
Packard Bell definately thought ahead when sticking two of the 4 USB slots at the front, this aloowed me to stick the keyboard and printer in the back and the mouse at the front. USB lets you hot swap devices (without rebooting) so that you can add a device like a digital camera, printer etc .. straight away Windows will recognise the hardware and you can use it almost instantly. Maybe for the more techy, and geeky people out there who may want USB 2.0 you could purchase a card.
Overall *****
This computer isn't brilliant, ant it probably wouldn't outperform most of your PC's on ciao, but it will serve you good if you stick in more memory and a Graphics card you will have a great gaming machine. But then again, they don't make these any more but I can imagine at around £120 off ebay you won't be getting ripped off.
(please forgive spelling - not using MS Word - lost the CD)
Advantages: Don't even go there! Disadvantages: They don't work!, Packard Bell are incompetent
I am writing this as a warning to anyone thinking of buying a Packard Bell computer. We bought our Packard Bell iconnect 1350 from PC World for £849 in May 2001. It came with a 17" A726 monitor, a 56K modem, an 800Mhz processor, 64MB RAM, 8MB shared memory and a 20GB hard drive. A very good deal - or so we thought.
Within weeks we were having problems with the computer. It kept crashing, particularly when we were on the Internet, and when we contacted ... ...and the Windows Me installed on the computer. Fair enough we thought, but still a bit of a pain. However, it did not stop there.
Soon the computer was seemingly crashing at random, and to make matters worse, it would never allow us to reset via. the 'Ctrl, Alt + Delete method'. It can never be good to have to keep switching off the computer before shutting down first! As if to compound this, we then started to notice that the computer wouldn't even ...

Advantages: quite fast, compact, reliable, great quality, built in card reader, compact, ink lasts long time, easy to use Disadvantages: none
...a while ago with my HP PC, and the first thing I noticed was that it didnt need any installation. It was pre- installed on the computer, which is something to bear in mind if you have a not very old HP computer. I therefore can't report on ease of Intallation, but it came with a disk, which is always a good sign.
As standalone It is just unbelievably easy to use. Turn it on, insert what you want to copy, as little as 1 button press later you have ... ...but quite regularly.
So, It's remarkably easy to use, very reliable, does everything, is cheap to run, and the print quality won't blow you away, but is the best of any printer i've ever had. A fantastic All-In-One printer, especially good with HP computers. I would reccomend without hesitation. ...

Advantages: None Disadvantages: Unreliable equipment, poor aftersales support from Packad Bell
I bought my Iconnect from Dixon's last August for £899 and have had nothing but complaints.
It started after 2 weeks when my mouse and key board stoped working. After a few checks, the problem was that the USB ports wouldn't recognise. After calling the support line I was advised remastering the system with the recovery disc. Thus loosing all my personal files, most of wich were too large to back up to floppy, I couldn't have backed up in any case ... ...solve the problem and after ther rest of the night on the phone, he service dept. finally decided to send an engineer out.
The motherboard had to be replaced as it was faulty, i could have saved my files after all as I didn't need to remaster it!!!!AAAAARRRRRGGGHHH!!!!
Any way, everything ran sweet for a few weeks until i kept having problems with internet explorer crashing. I could live with this for the time being. After another week the computer ...

I agree with the other people that have complained about the Iconnect on here. I have had problems mine from the very begining It crashed ... ...computer". So from then on I knew there would be trouble with it. Sometimes for absaloutly no good reason the sound goes off, and i have to reinstall the sound drivers, it crashes all the time, And is always low on RAM despite me adding another 128MB since i got it. Every time it goes into stand by or hibernation it just stops responding.

CARTRIDGE COSTS
The cartridge price depends on where you purchase them from, but range from £18.00 to about £25.00. As I have already mentioned, you will get approximately 500 pages from the cartridge, which if you take the middle of the road price, works out at about 4.5 pence per page. I have found that buying the cartridges online actually works out ...
