...In my line of work I come across a range of computers. Working with companies across the south I usually recommend Hewlett Packard machines when organising a roll-out, or even for individual purchases.
The reason for this is because they are very solid. Hewlett Packard spends a great deal of time developing these machines and they're very very reliable.
I recently worked with the UK office of a world-wide health and fitness company. The project was to provide new machines for their till's and sales computers for all of the clubs across the UK. A list of machines was put together and the DX2000MT was chosen.
It's a mini tower P4 2.8Gig, with 512 meg Ram and 40gig Hard drive. Expansion is easy. 4 USB 2.0 sockets on the back and 2 on the front. With it's screwless case it's easy to get into, but I must say that the machine is more...

Advantages: great portability Disadvantages: Problems with this hp model
...Notebook speed issue
I think data bus speed is the culprit here.
The Front Side Bus (FSB) is the data channel that connects the processor, other chips, memory, and the video circuitry. The motherboard in this HP laptop runs at a pokey 100MHz FSB. A comparably-priced Toshiba (A45-S121) runs at 266Mhz FSB using the same 2.8GHzCeleron. The processor can support up to a 400MHz FSB.
See this HP laptop series specs at ---------------
To date, all Celeron2.8GHz processors have had on-die L2 cache of only 128KB. The Pentium 4 versions have L2 cache of up to 512KB and run at a 533MHz FSB. This includes HP ZE5xxx series notebooks built with Pentium 4 CPUs.
Lastly, when running on battery, the power saving setup of most notebooks will throttle back the CPU speed to increase battery life. You might be able to override this by adjusting...

Advantages: Capable of Handling heavy applications on Vista Disadvantages: Bulky system cabinet, Recovery CDs to be created from HD partition.
...This pc comes with wireless mouse & keyboard which are not intutive to set up but not the hardest. The monster processor Intel Viiv E6600 works its wonders when working with a processor heavy operating system such as Vista. A decent 2 GB RAM does not stutter any resource heavy software.
The lightscribe DVD is also an excellent innovation letting you burn you label on the flip side of a DVD although its can only do this on "lightscribe" compatible DVDs. The graphics card is almost all you need even for a game like Flight Simulator.
Finally the 400 GB hard drive can never get full unless you are using it as a picture / video server. The PC can also be used as a TV. The only bad thing is that there are no recovery CDs and these have to burnt manually using the software and recovery partition on D drive...
