The Hp Photosmart 318 is my second digital camera. My first was a no-name special that i purchased because i wanted a CCD webcam and not a CMOS one. When I bought this one I made sure I didn't repeat my first mistakes.
PROS: Name Brand; Hp makes an excellent product and they produce quality drivers. Software; The included software can automatically unload the pictures into a DATED folder! Photostudio is cool too. OS; The camera os is intuative and easy to use with the selector wheel. Batteries; 4of them AA size gives this camera good battery life. I have taken almost 100 photos without flash on a single charge of my 1800mAh NiMH batteries. (Duracell, not included but highly recommended) LCD; is large, bright and suitable quality. Reliable; this thing is a tank JPeG compression; standard and tight
CONS: -camera doesn't run/charge from usb cable -no lens cap/cover -no webcam functionality -no cable out to RCA -2 stage shutter button can be confusing; push softly to just focus, push harder to focus then take a picture -slow to capture a picture, slow to compress/store the picture
Advantages: ease of use, good spec Disadvantages: not that good in low light, heavy on batteries
...When I got it about a year ago the HP Photosmart 318 seemed to offer the best definition for the money. 2.3 megapixels for abour £180. It has an 8 mb internal memory which can store 7 images in top quality, 16 in medium and 116 in lowest. It will accept flash memory cards which greatly increase the capacity. the main features of the camera are autofocus, anti red eye flash, autoexposure (there are 2 settings f2.8 and f8.0), self timer, and 2x digital zoom. There is no optical zoom. Download is via a usb port.
I have found that in bright even conditions the camera will produce very good results, with a sharp image and good colour balance. It is less good in dark conditions, and doesn't seem to have very good light gathering properties. It also struggles in conditions where the sky is bright and the foreground is dark, although most...

Advantages: Long lasting. Disadvantages: Poor battery life with standard batteries.
...Had the camera for over 3 years now and still working brilliantly.
Being a bit old now, the design is a bit dated, and it is quite large compared to the more modern cameras available, but it was a high end model when first purchased.
The battery life with standard AA batteries is poor - I was getting about 10 minutes of use from it - and it uses 4 batteries! I changed to rechargable 'photo' batteries - and the battery life is far better - you can get a good few hours of taking pictures out of it. It's a shame it doesn't come with an adaptor though.
The 2.31 mega pixels still provides good quality photos, even though much larger resolution cameras are available now.
The sliding 'on' button can accidently get turned on quite easily though if in a bag or pocket etc....

Advantages: strong case Disadvantages: high use of batteries
...Having had a HP photosmart 318 for nearly nine months I've found the camera to be very easey to use, noably for anybody new to digital camera's. Its easey to use operation makes it ready to go with little guidance required from the instruction book. A clear good size LCD screen help to make a decison to keep or delete any pictures taken before loading to a PC. The software accompanying the camera is straight forward and quickly loaded to your PC,and very simple to use with hours of fun avaliable in making up staged photo's.
Disadvages are that sometimes when focusing I would start the timer ... but I suspect this may have been a user fault!!.The one main disadvadge would be the battery useage..very heavy if 50 or more photographs are taken..solution use re-chargeable batteries with a spare set in the backgroud
8/10...
