This option works really well and i found it easier, especially if you are printing in bulk. You also get editing/cropping options which the printer doesn't give you as a standalone option. I bought this for my girlfriends digital camera to help her through uni. I bought it purely on price and branding. This was my first dealing with a HP printer.
The HP photosmart printers seem to be smaller than most of their rivals - epson, canon, etc - with a few exceptions. Its nice and compact and i've never had a problem with transporting it. The paper feed is on the back of the unit which is different to HPs desktop printers where the feed is on the front. The cartridge loads into the front. Although its designed as a standalone printer (without the need for a computer) it does come with software to load onto a computer. You will have to buy a USB lead separately though. This option works really well and i found it easier, especially if you are printing in bulk. You also get editing/cropping options which the printer doesn't give you as a standalone option. Should you want a printer with these options there are many more on the market now, made by all manufacturers, than there were when this model first came out. If your camera has a pictbridge function (where you connect the camera directly to the printer, bypassing the computer) then you can use that with this printer. This is good as most camera screens are better than the in built one on the machine. The cable for this is the one that would have come with your camera to connect to the computer.
Set up, as with most of these small printers, is very easy. Plug it in, load the cartridge and away you go. You only get 5 sheets of 6x4 paper (the largest it can print) so buy the value pack of paper and cartridge - approx cost per print is 23p. This is more expensive than most developers, but with these printers it's convenience that you're buying.
Having placed the XD card in the slot (it also houses smartmedia, sony memory stick [adaptor required if you have DUO] compact flash and SD/MMC slots) the options pop up on screen - print all photos, select photos, borderless etc. The screen itself is stationary so you have to look at it from directly above. The screen quality isn't brilliant so use it as a rough guide. After selecting the photos i pressed print. Printing is slow, much slower than newer models. It takes about 90secs to print one 6x4. So if you're printing your holiday photos make sure you've got something else to do. Though, if you do have hundreds of pics i'd take them to be developed - based on price and quality. I was really pleased with the accuracy of colours and overall print quality. If you're one of these people (like i am to an extent) who looks closely at a printed image to see how good the quality it is you will notice it's not the sharpest. However, looking at it as you would normally - in an album for example - you'd be pushed to notice the difference. So, after a few tester prints i was happy with the results. B&W prints have a blue tint to them, but most inkjets struggle with B&W - some manufacturers' prints have a blue tint, others a greeny tint.
A few months on and i noticed a drawback with the quality. Prints that had been exposed to the elements - for example light - needed to be re printed. If you spill water over the prints - again this is the same with most inkjet prints - you will have to reprint as they are not water resistant. That's why i suggest you get your holiday photos developed - they are water resistant. Also, the prints suffer badly from exposure to light - which is why i keep mine in an album. The prints turn pink (!) when exposed for long periods. I decided to fiddle with one of these prints - as you do! - and noticed that you can peel off the ink (dry)! Now, you might be reading this and be put off by this printer. Its not as bad as it sounds. The prints that i have in my albums are as good now as they were when they were printed. The colour accuracy is very good - better than a lot of inkjet printers. For school projects and things like that this printer is just so convenient and my girlfriend (now fiance BTW) said she couldn't have got through uni without it. It does save a lot of time and effort and if your project is in the next day and you need a photo you probably won't be able to go to a developers on time. Convenience, convenience, convenience!!!
On the whole i know that most people will be happy with the prints from this machine which is why i recommend it. Just make sure you keep them in a good place.
For those who want really good quality i'd recommend a dye-sub printer made by Canon or Sony. These aren't inkjet. They use a process similar/same to a developer. This means that they will last longer and are water resistant - not waterproof! Quality of these are excellent and are used by a lot of freelance photographers who take you photo at the beach etc. They are slightly more expensive than an inkjet but by no means substantial. However i'm sure that a printer like this one can be picked up for peanuts now.
Advantages: Portable printing on the move without a PC Disadvantages: Limited to one size of prints

I bought the printer as a package which included the printer, an HP bag, cables and battery. All in all I have been delighted with this printer and recommend it to anyone who wants painless 6" X 4" printing on the go. ...

Advantages: Sooo easy to use Disadvantages: havent found any yet
I picked up this little machine with my shopping order in Tescos last week. it was on offer for £64.95 which is half the retail price. I brought it home with my 7 year old and plugged it in. In can be connected via computer, and all the software to do it came in the box but we went for the easy option which is just plug in and switch on! Setting up was just put in ink supplied...easy...put in paper...again easy....and then add memory card from camera ... ...a USB port) , again REALLY easy. All our pictures were displayed one by one on a screen so we had great fun deciding which ones to select. It was then just a case of pressing print! Again sooo easy! Only disadvantage was that it only came with 5 photosheets so an extra trip to Tesco was needed!
Refills for the macnine are £22.99 which (says on the box) can do about 100 prints. The refills do come with 100 sheets of paper so ready to go!
I have ...

Advantages: Size, convenience Disadvantages: not supplied with battery, quality
I went shopping one day with my girlfriend and just like her; she saw free food in a carphone warehouse and dragged me in. The food was to promote this printer and a new photo phone. So convinced by the nice lady we both filled in an entry for the competition. Well to cut the story down, not more than 5mins later I got a call and went to collect my prize and have my photo taken with the staff, prize in hand. As for the printer itself, it’s very compact ... ...a standalone printer. To edit pictures a computer is needed or its bigger brother the 375. It claims it’s completely portable but a wall socket is needed unless you buy a separate rechargeable battery for the printer which slots nicely into the base. The pictures themselves are adequate and for the convenience it’s worth it. Printing right to the edge of the paper and from a little distance in a frame they are not noticeable from a cheaper online ...

Advantages: cheap, easy to use, reliable, good quality prints Disadvantages: a little slow
For a camera and printer package that was purchased approximately four years ago (maybe five!) the printer has proven to be extremely reliable. It has been used as a dedicated photo printer for use when we wanted particular photographs from the digital camera as 'hard' copies for family and friends. It is easy to operate and in my opinion has all that anyone would need and want in a small printer to be used for the occasional run of photographs. ...
