I got this printer over a year ago now. I believe it had only just been released then and it is the perfect complement to any digital camera (I’ll get to why in a sec). I bought mine bundled with a HP C200 camera which has also served me well (I’ll review that next week as my parents have got it on holiday with them in Switzerland at the moment)

What it looks like, well its black, a break from the normal beige of most printers. Has a standard front-loading paper tray and has a slot for small photo sized paper (If your daft/lazy enough to buy it, since it is much cheaper to buy A4 photo paper and cut it up)

Installation is fairly hassle free and the printer came with a poster sized guide to set it up (seemed extravagant but it made a change from tiny bits of paper that are some excuse for a set-up guide). It calibrates its self something I was slightly shocked at when it first did it (pop a piece of paper in and it prints and scans to line the cartridges up correctly).

You can connect it via the parallel port but I’d recommend connecting it via USB, as you will get the added advantage of faster saving from memory cards/infer-red to your computer. Which neatly brings me on to the reason to buy this printer over one of the other cheaper but still as good quality printers from HP. The P1000 supports 4 yes 4 different types of media storage from which it can print directly (you don’t even need a computer to do this!!). They are Compact Flash Cards, Smart Media Cards, Wireless fast Infrared and HP JetSend II

Using without a computer – This is the only printer I’ve come across that you don’t actually need a computer to use and it works quite well. The user inter face is a small display on the front of the printer. It tells you the printer’s status normally or how many photos are on the card. Below this display three two way buttons that each select number of copy’s, choose which photos you would like to print or save and the photo size for printing. There is an ok and cancel buttons and below them a save button (for when connected to a PC) and print button; other functions are hidden away in the tools button.

Using with a computer – Well same as any other printer really but with the addition of the save button which when pressed, pops up a screen on the computer asking where you want to save the photos its found on the memory card (it automatically assumes that you want to save them in my pictures then a directory named with the current date and time).

Being a printer I’d better mention something about print quality ;-) all I can say is wow. Moving from a HP 850C with 300x300 dpi to this printer with up to 2400x1200 dpi the difference was huge. To put it simply I can scan a photo then print it out again on photo paper and spot very little difference. Ink usage is as with most HP printers at least in normal use is excellent changing cartridges every 3 to 6 months. Compared to some Cannons I’ve seen that can get though one of there cartages in a week.

Anyway I thing I’ve rabbited on enough. To sum up the P1000 is an excellent introduction and base to digital photography.

HP Photosmart p1000 well worth it
Review of HP PhotoSmart P1000 by Delboy161

Advantages: Quiet, and good quality
Disadvantages: price of acessories

...a reasonable price, and the Hp p1000 is superb for just £200. It prints great quality scanned pictures at 2400x1200 dpi (dots per inch), and it is very user friendly. This inkjet printer comes with everything appart from the printer cable, but that can be bought almost anywhere for £10. The software which comes with it is very easy to use and install, and the printer comes with a paralel port lead, so it can be easily connected to your pc (and for ...
...The printer is your basic HP inkjet size and comes in a nice black colour which will easily fit all suroundings. The ink cartriges are easy to replace and find, and best of all, they last a long time. The only downfall is that a colour cartrige costs around £29, and good quality photo paper is around £11 for 20 A4 sheets Overall, if you are looking for a very good quality printer, which is easy to use, and is digital camera compatable, this is ... ...much quieter than the previous HP I owned. Printing is slower than a laser, but not too bad in draft or normal status. It is certainly quick for an inkjet. If you are looking for a good quality colour printer with the extra features of photo printing, then this certainly is a product I would recommend. I am sure that HP have updated this model so perhaps this opinion may be a bit dated. Nevertheless I am really pleased with my printer. ... Read review

Hp ScanJet 5370C well worth it
Review of HP ScanJet 5370C by  Delboy161

Advantages: Fast, good quality, and easy to set up
Disadvantages: quite large, and sensitive

...I was looking for a new top of the range scanner, to go along with my Hp P1000 photo smart printer, so I needed one at a good price, but which had great quality scanning, and I found it. Everyone knows that Hp can be a bit pricey, but for around £130, this has to be worth it. It has a max resolution of 2400 x 1200 dpi (dots per inch), and this is ideal for enlarging pics and still keeping the quality in the picture. It is quick and as you can save the pics as jpegs, and other file types, it does'nt use alot of space on your hard drive. When loading a pictuer, you also have many functions, ranging from resolution, colour quality, lighting, and inlaging or decreasing the picture size. The scanner is slightly larger than the average flat bed scanner, but it is very user friendly, and has 4 short cut buttons on the front of it... Read review
