I received the HP Photosmart C4585 as a Christmas 2008 present and so am not sure how much was paid for it- though I know it was bought from Curry's. To sum up in the first paragraph all I can say is that this in an incredible piece of technology- the freedom of not having to plug in printers and scanners into my laptop is a great asset that I did not think I could appreciate to such an extent.
The product was found in excellent condition upon opening the packaging due to the strong polystyrene inserts that fitted the box like a glove. Inside all the relevent user manuals, quick start guide (for both windows and apple), warranty cards and sample ink cartridges were included.
When paired with my wireless-g network this printer/scanner/copier took approximately 30 minutes too set up. I am quite computer literate so perhaps a complete novice computer user may find it more difficult and hence take longer to set up but it should be easy to complete for someone with perseverance as the instructions were excellent.
Solidly built of a strong plastic with a white glossy finish this printer is compact in size all things considered that it is not only a printer but a scanner and photocopier too. There is a small one inch colour screen which sounds basic but is actually more than sufficient for its use of selecting pictures to print from memory cards inserted into the integrated memory card slot or to tell the printer how many copies to make of a document whilst in photocopier mode.
I have used the machine to make colour photocopies of all my old school photos and was impressed that the integrated software could resize the images to turn an A4 photo into a 4" x 6" print with the options of a bordered or borderless copy. When copying my bank statements I am able to tell the printer to copy in greyscale (to save colour ink) and the black and white copies are perfect every time.
When printing I have wirelessly printed both photos and text documents and have been impressed with both types of project. Photos do seem to use a lot of ink but are vivid with no lines appearing on the image like some older photo printers seem to leave. Text documents are of what I would consider laser printer quality.
Wireless scanning can sometimes be traumatic. For one image there is no issue it works every time, but I have found when scanning lots of images sometimes the printer needs to be switched on and off too prevent it getting confused between scanning jobs. I have been impressed generally with the speed the scans are transferred wireless across my network to my laptop. I am also impressed with the supplied software which can identify multiple photos in the scanner, which means you can scan five or six small photos in the scanner at any given time and the software will separate them into five or six individual jpeg files.
Overall I would recommend this printer to anyone looking to upgrade their printer- especially to people who don't have much space. Even if you don't have a wireless network a USB cable can be used and it could be prudent to invest in a wireless printer now if you intend on wireless networking in the immediate future.
