Last week, I was asked to journey to my local Office World to buy paper for some holiday snaps. After some shelve browsing I came across the Hewlett Packard Premium photo paper. I bought it purely due to the fact the packaging seemed to reach out, and in one swift promotional swing, forced me to purchase the product. Well okay I'm exaggurating, the main thing which attracted me to the product was the price tag. Office World have always been pretty good on prices, and the 6.79 I paid for a 10 sheet A4 pack of this left me feeling most impressed, infact I picked up two packs worth to cover all the pictures!
The paper's appearance is of particular high quality. Its extremely glossy, and resembles the sort of paper you find on the covers of magazines, yet much thicker. Of course, I was highly skeptical of the results when used in conjunction with the HP 610 Inkjet model I used it with. The paper however, did not disapoint. I was stunned by the results, the pictures themselves resembled real film-quality shots. A particular perk was the vibrancy of the colours, the paper makes full use of the printers ink cartridges to produce outstanding shots. I was somewhat afraid of getting at least one sheet of this paper jammed during the printing process, thankfully though HP's good manufacturing process paid off, and all came out perfect.
The paper is after all, very similar to that of normal developed photograph paper from a shop like Max Spielman. Its thickness measures at around 240 g/m2. Its no surprise that it takes awhile to actually print off photographs on this paper, due to the extremely high quality textures it can acheive. The secret behind the actual quality this paper can acheive is that the paper supports high resolution DPI settings (in this case 4800 x 1800). Put simply, the higher the DPI, the more clear the image.
Once I'd printed off the photos I made full use of the stick-resistant backs of each sheet as I piled up the newly printed pictures. This feature is fantastic, it does a great job of preventing any smudging of the ink, it also means you don't have to lay out each sheet separately. Meaning you save a heck of a lot of space when printing out entire albums.
Prior to printing off the digital photos I did a test sheet to see if any of the colours ran at all. I was pleased to discover that unless you immediately jerk the paper at the moment it finishes printing there is no colour running whatsoever. However the ink does take time to dry, after all HP is not capable of changing the laws of chemistry! Another thing worthy of mention is the fact the paper is in A4 format, so it may be necessary to purchase fairly large frames for your best snaps. The A4 size also makes it fantastic for portrait pictures too.
While I'm no photography expert I'd say Hp's Premium Photo Paper is one of the finest quality products, producing fantastic results even with lower-end printer models like the 610 Inkjet I used. If you own a HP printer, I highly recommend buying this product for any photo printouts, as the results are simply stunning, and should be even better on a more expensive printer model. Happy printing!
