Low Cost Enterprise Security Firewall Router

Advantages: Powerful, Easy to configure, Good support, Low cost
Disadvantages: Needs extra 'modem' for each broadband Connection, Occasional reboots required

the 2950 as a router with the added bonus of having VPN capabilities but with a CISCO, although considerably more expensive, usually has hardware that is made for the job in particular so I would expect a CISCO to perform better than the Draytek (but I do not know from experience). A CISCO router would probably require fewer reboots (maybe once a year or even less) so they are more reliable but they would require a CISCO qualified engineer to configure (at cost). Despite this, if the budget allows, I?d also consider CISCO products for the added security and reliability. However for a small to medium business where budget is limited, the Draytek Vigor 2950 can do the job, is easy to configure, is low cost and has good manufacturer support so I?m happy to recommend it. Thanks for reading! ...

Review of Draytek Vigor 2950 - router

If your looking for a VPN router look else where.

Advantages: Router and wireless in one package
Disadvantages: VPN doesn't work as advertised!

I purchased this router hoping that I'd be able to connect my Hx4700 pocket pc to my local Lan via VPN but unfortunately it didn't work! As a wireless router I can't say anything wrong about the WRV54G, once you managed to set it up it works a treat. The manual is slightly out of date, with a few extra settings appearing which if set wrong can prevent the router from working properely. One new setting is the VPN gateway function, this is not listed in the current manual. This function is so that if you have a site where all your traffic must go via a central gateway, ie you use a internet proxy, the router can send all your traffic over a vpn tunnel to that site. The problem comes if you make the mistake of thinking that this function is setting the router up as a gateway to accept VPN connections. If this function is turned ...

Netgear FVS114 ProSafe VPN Firewall/Switch

Advantages: Good features, VPN support, 10/100 WAN port
Disadvantages: Challenging documentation

is a comprehensive list of services you can use for setting up NAT based port mapping and you can add new services as required. The FVS114 will also automatically retrieve the time from its built in list of time servers or you can add up to two of your own. There's plenty here to keep your kids under control if you need to! The VPN options are comprehensive with several screen devoted to their configuration. You can get the router to automatically update a number of the more common dynamic DNS services such as dynsnd.org. If you don't want to use dynamic IP allocation, you can also program in fixed addresses according to MAC address (the unique codes every network device has). You can mix and match between fixed and dynamic if required. Finally, you can select if the device will respond to ping (a way to tell if the router is working ...
