My husband and I have never been very technically minded people so finding products that are easy to understand and very user friendly are a must in our purchasing decisions. We have now owned the HP Scan Jet 4400c for about 3 years now and it served us well until we bought another computer.
The problem occurred very stupidly and was nothing technically wrong – just adhesively wrong. The disc to install this scanner onto a computer had a paper casing which had been glued down. When we installed it into our first computer, we tucked the flap inside and unfortunately the glue stuck to the disc and ruined it. We visited the HP website only to discover a new disc would cost us £10. I suppose this isn’t a bad price but I’ll let you know what happens in a minute.
This scanner is a flat bed scanner which means it is in a horizontal position. There is a lid which lifts up and the scanner will take paper up to A4 in size. This scanner is quite old now – we’ve had ours for a while and it is very bulky and quite heavy. The scanner connects to the computer by a USB connection and there are four buttons on the front of the scanner – you can use these to scan documents to various places e.g. onto a file, an application, e-mail or fax.
The installation process is quite quick and very easy to understand. HP have made this easy for those and the instructions are easy to follow which means we were able to get using it quite quickly. The software includes Precision Pro but what was good was the chance to view the document, being able to adjust it and then finally scan it again. There are various options for changing the attributes and colouring e.g. greyscale etc. You are also able to choose what kind of document you are scanning which means if it is just a text document, it can be scanned quickly and photos can be scanned slower so they are much better quality.
The scanner quality is actually rather good. Of course if you are scanning anything to be printed, the quality will also depend on your printer so for photos it is a good idea to have a good quality printer.
Scanning can be done into other programmes too if you want to make other adjustments before printing or sending by e-mail etc.
The reason I am considering not buying another disc is the cable that connects the scanner to the power supply. We have had to replace them several times because they just seem to stop working. I think they must have been bending in awkward ways and something went wrong. Luckily there were no serious consequences to this. The cable was very thick and had to be forcefully bended to sit in a better position. The second reason would be the advancement in technology. There are a lot more scanners available for low prices but an improvement on what this one is. This is very bulky and not very friendly to move around and I have seen much thinner ones on the market.
If I remember rightly, this cost us around £70 all those years ago but will be significantly reduced these days if you can find one.

...at school I purchased this HP Scan Jet (Jet sounds fast) to help me with my coursework. I needed to scan in a few documents everyday. These ranged from basic word documents to newspaper articles.
USB means the scanner can send the information to the computer a lot faster and plug and play is more likely to find the device, which it did.
My first item I needed to scan was a letter for my Business Studies coursework. I turned the scanner on and pressed ... ...two minutes later my document was on the computer. At the time I had around a 1.8ghz computer with 512mb RAM and a 40 GB HDD, a very good computer. So why did it take so long?
Well that's what I wanted to know. I plugged the scanner into another computer and still the same problem. So I knew the problem wasn't my PC or software so what could I do next? Well I took the scanner to my cousins house and tried it on their computer and still the same problem.

Advantages: very good quality scanning Disadvantages: somewhat sentitive on red tones
This is my second HP scanner, after having used for years a SCSI HP ScanJet 5p. I bought this A4 size scanner along with my Dell desktop a couple of years ago. I am very happy with it. It's USB, Windows XP autoinstalls it, Windows 2000 needs the drivers. Drivers can also be found on HP site. I never had any direct contact with technical /customer service, so I can't say. It has 4 buttons on the front panel, can also email documents directly.
