Advantages: Very quick at preview and scan Disadvantages: Price
...I brought the Hp scanjet 4200c scanner second hand over two years ago and have found it to be a good buy although due to a dodgy repair by the prevous owner only half of my scanner works but i still say that is one of the best scanners around.
It does not do negatives but then only the expensive ones do.
Basically it does all you could want it to do.
The preview time using the Windows xp scanner and camera wizzard it takes just 15 secs to do a preview.
The avarage scan time is just 25 secs on a normal A4 scan.
It is a very easy product to use and well worth the money.
Any one who buys this scanner will not regret buying it because it so fantastic....

Advantages: Four button instant use, color scanning, .pdf files, add-on pages for e-mail, slide compatible Disadvantages: takes up some space, older technology.
...The 5300C scanner from HP has given reliable use for three years. USB connection is a plus for this older scanner. I started with Windows 98 and I am now using with Windows XP home edition. It works well with XP. HP has the drivers on it's web page to direct the user to the proper program. The color (1200 dpi resolution) is compatible with current scanners. The ability to remove the cover and place a slide adaptor is a great addition. The four-button quick scan; copy; e-mail; and fax, works well. The only disadvantage is one needs to know what the e-mail and fax quick use buttons are actually sending to! I've had no trouble with the 5300C scanner....
