As storage capacity doubles every year businesses struggle to keep up with storage demands. Contributing factors to the growth in storage include applications becoming more complex, increasing file sizes, and an increasing number of government regulations regarding the storage of information. In addition to this, companies need to operate 24x7 to not be left behind. To keep up with these demands, they look to service providers to guide them in their decision making when creating a data protection strategy. Key components of this strategy should be reliability, lower total cost of ownership, investment protection, and ease of use. The new StorageWorks Network Storage Router M2402 offers all of the above. The M2402 is a key component in a complete data protection solution. It is a 1U rackmount Fiber Channel-to-SCSI router with two 1Gb or 2Gb Fiber Channel ports and four SCSI (LVD/SE or HVD) ports on the base model and allows multiple host servers to communicate with a SCSI tape device over a Fiber Channel link. It is targeted towards customers whose backup window is impacting mission critical business operations and need to reduce or remove the impact of the backup window. It offers support for serverless backup, 1Gb and 2Gb Fiber Channel and has web based management allowing for remote management. This is the first Compaq serverless solution.
Advantages: Reliable, efficient data storage. Good compatibility Disadvantages: Noisy, capacity not the greatest, speed.
...As most of you may be aware, computer data is very important to most of us in out jobs today. However, what happens if that data is suddenly lost or destroyed? Well, I can tell you, we would be in a right mess!
Therfore the best method to protect yourself is to back up your computer data regularly! This is ok on your home computer as a lot of people back up their important files to memory stick, DVD or CD.
But what happens in the office where there are lots of shared files and data?
enter the data tape drive. Yes your servers at work are probably backed up onto tapes. These are not too dissimilar to your Audio tapes of a few years back. They are magnetic tapes that store large amount sof computer data on them via a tape drive.

Advantages: Easy to carry around, established quality brand name Disadvantages: Lid can be easily broken if carry strap attached
...the drive letter it has been assigned in the explorer window. This is handy when I am at work and have a number of network drives to contend with. Another useful feature are the ribbed sides, which make it much easier when pulling the stick out of the USB port. Also, the lid clips onto both ends of the stick for stowing purposes when the drive is plugged in, which avoids you having to spend ages thinking where you left it. One of the downsides is that, if you have the carry strap fitted, you risk damaging the lid when fitting it in the "stowing" position, unless you remove the strap first (which is, in itself, quite a fiddly job if you don't have tiny fingers). The corner of the lid on mine has broken off.
In about nine months of constant use on a number of PCs and laptops, I have had absolutely no problems tranferring data and no files...

Advantages: Small, reliable, decent range, easy to set-up and tweak Disadvantages: Not so great looking, suffers from static occaisionally
...adaptors in the two wireless systems and turned it on, and had it working within a few more minutes. I found the quickest way to get online was to wait for the pc to connect to the router, then open Internet Explorer, type 192.168.1.1 into the address bar and fill out the password and username details before clicking connect. Then its just a matter of tweaking the network using windows' "Set up home or small office network" wizard, and you're away. For anyone who knows networking on this small scale, there is no real need to read the quick start guide...or the manual on the disc either. I have never used the utilities on the disc provided, prefering to work things out for myself. If you are not sure on the more advanced settings, www.portforward.com is a brilliant source of free tutorials/walkthroughs on a range of advanced settings for most...
