Manufacturer's product description
The HP StorageWorks Ultrium 230 tape drive is the high-performance, first-generation superdrive in the HP Ultrium family. The Ultrium 230 offers excellent capacity, superior performance and exceptional reliability. An ideal solution for network server backup where speed, capacity and reliability are critical, the Ultrium 230 stores 200 GB of compressed data on a single tape at speeds of up to 108 GB per hour. With ultimate reliability and ease of use in mind, the rugged design builds on superior LTO technology and adds advanced features to deliver a new level of data protection. The combination of higher speed and data rate matching that adjusts to the speed of the host makes the HP Ultrium 230 an ideal backup solution for over-the-network backup where minimal downtime is imperative and throughput bottlenecks can raise havoc with other types of tape drives. In addition, the drive's HP One-Button Disaster Recovery provides the easiest way to restore data in the event of a disaster. The HP Ultrium 230 tape drive makes an excellent workhorse for all-around data protection.
Advantages: Reliable, efficient data storage. Good compatibility Disadvantages: Noisy, capacity not the greatest, speed.
...for up to 15 hours a night so are likely to get plenty of use.
Speed is not the greatest asset of this drive compared to the latest and greatest drives as you are also at the mercy of the SCSI and data transfer speed. They do take their time to back up but you can also rest assured that they will get the job done!
What is its compatibility like with 3rd Party software Andy?
Again, faultless. While HP do their own flavours of backup software, we use a product by Symantec called Backup exec. We originally had version 8.0 and are now running Version 10.0 The upgrade caused no issues with compatibility and the drives worked equally as well with both versions. Backup exec allows you to use the drive to its full potential so you can schedule backup jobs, perform data restores, etc.
A great accompanying product for the drive.

...the leading edge LTO tapes have a small spring loaded "door" at the side through which the tape is dispensed into the drive. So unlike your videos, which spool from one side to the other, this is spun out in one long line and then rewound. I could be totally wrong but Fuji and the other manufacturers are a little obscure on this!
Enough of that anyway; what do you do with them?
You copy your ever so precious data onto it. Now I'm willing to bet a penny to an LTO drive that your data isn't worth £3000+. Nope, didn't think so.
But for business it is. Frequently it's worth a lot more than that.
Your average home user will NEVER need this much storage capacity. Each tape has a native (I.E. Uncompressed) capacity of 200GB. Most home PCs don't even have hard drives that big. Compress the data and you can get a theoretical capacity of 400GB...

...) the drive managed to hit 50° C on the top, and the sides sizzled a nice 54° at its peak.
Maxtor states that the drive’s tolerable operating temperature peaks at 55°C, so the temperatures are not a problem, certainly no higher than other 7200Rpm drives, as long as it is properly cooled. The drive is also near silent, even when I put my ear to it during testing it was hard to hear noise coming from the drive.
So, 200GB of space, Serial ATA, blistering speed, what more could you want? Not a lot.
As you can see by the tests this drive is among the fastest in its class, offers an almost unfillable amount of storage space, and due to its Serial ATA interface it is easier than ever to install (and manage the cables!). I would recommend this to anyone who is building a new modern system, or a fast workstation machine, or if you are simply...
