Manufacturer's product description
Protecting data is critical to the competitive life of any business. Retrieving that data with speed and efficiency is equally critical. Hewlett Packard SureStore optical jukeboxes provide immediate, reliable access to mass amounts of archived information from a central location. The Hewlett Packard 400ex has a 395.2GB capacity and holds 76 optical discs for quick, simultaneous retrieval by multiple users. Its improved design and advanced robotics deliver discs to the drive in 10 seconds, eliminating unnecessary waiting. Users can view their files in as little as four seconds. HP's 400ex is ideal for large networks, document management, data archiving, and CAD/CAM storage. It's a reliable and cost-efficient solution to all your data archiving demands, no matter how intense. HP's SureStore ex series of optical jukeboxes read and write both 5.2GB and 2.6GB cartridges, read 1.3GB and 650MB cartridges, and are compatible with rewritable and write-once media. The entire ex series provides capacities ranging from 80GB to 1.2TB.
Advantages: Good points. Easy to install and use. Nice web browser interface. Disadvantages: Bad points. Very expensive for what is essentially a pc with a lot of hard disk space. No virus protection. No room for upgrading.
...Up until now most back up hardware has tended to concentrate on the server side. If a user wanted to back up their desktop PC or laptop, they could either get the IT support staff to create and run a back up job from the server room or have a back up device fitted to their PC.
The former requiring the time and patience of support staff to complete the task and the latter requiring expensive hardware to be installed on every PC, this being somewhat more tricky when a laptop is involved. HP claim they have solved this conundrum with their SureStore AutoBackup.
HPSureStore AutoBackup consists of a customised server (or appliance in their words) with an internal HPSureStore CD-Writer and customised backup and restore software. It is designed to attach to an existing LAN in small to medium size companies or workgroups, so that users...

Advantages: Good points. Obscenely easy way to rebuild a corrupted server. Disadvantages: Bad points. Limited hardware and software support. Make sure your operating system can read all partitions.
...Those of us who have had to spend a late Friday afternoon rebuilding a really important server, longing to get to the pub, will no doubt be yearning for something where we can just press one button and get the machine back up and running and doing all the things it was supposed to do before it went base over apex.
Until recently disaster recovery has been a lengthy, time-consuming process of locating operating system (OS) disks, application disks, backup tapes, and configuration details.
The new Hewlett PackardSureStore DAT40e could be an answer to those prayers, for its much-touted industry first, one-button disaster recovery (OBDR), a clever system which fools your server into thinking the tape back up drive is really a bootable CD-ROM drive.
Booting from a tape drive is not new. In fact, most dedicated UNIX workstations...

Advantages: Quiet, Compact and Reliable Disadvantages: Occasional difficulty initialising tapes
...Have only been using this drive for 3-4 weeks but it has proved invaluable. The 12GB native capacity is more than adequate for most data backup needs. I, personally, backup data files rather than system files which uses much less storage. System backups are not the most reliable and inevitably need a re-install anyway.
The drive is, generally, very quiet although it does occassionally make a nasty rattling, from the tape itself, when winding/rewinding halts. Speed of backup is acceptable I normally backup about 2GB is less than an hour. I have not had occasion to restore files yet but do not anticipate any problems. The HPSureStore is a well-established and well-respected brand. The 4mm DDS tapes are very compact and easy to store and label, allowing simple library organisation.
For larger capacity backups the drive supports...
