in my quest to find the perfect monitor at this price range i discovered that you probably will have to have a "TN" type technology because they are cheaper and offer excellent response times: of these 22" LCDs my front runners in oct07 were Samsung 226BW Samsung 226CW HP w2207
I was going to get a Samsung 226BW because of the 2ms response time until i started reading about the different versions going about. the S version manufactured by Samsung, being one released to the press for review the other lesser versions A and C that were sub-contracted out to other manufacurers and are sub-standard versions, that give blue color casts etc. The Samsung 226CW that has recently come onto the market and is now available in the UK is the replacement for the 226BW and is stated to be guaranteed made by Samsung and with improved backlight. However this is currently £50 more than the HP w2207
After the 226BW issue I was reluctant to part with my money to Samsung whos reputation in my view has reached rock bottom with me because of the A and C versions issue.
I did give Samsung a chance though and went along to a couple of stores to view both the Samsung and HP products
Basically i found that i do not like Samsung designs anyway but loved the HP. Looking at both screens in a normal position it was apparent to me that the HP rendering of images was added to by the glossy coating - so, because of this and the more flexible stand i purchased the HP w2207 (and the price difference played a small part in my decision)
stand: excellent adjustment options possible including the portrait position.
it is easy to put the monitor physically into this position but then you need to run the software to get the input to adjust 90 degrees the HP software can do this but on my test I used the nvidia software that came with my graphics cards
other positions are easy to set especially the up/down that i'm using all the time - you just move the screen and it stays put
the tilt range is limited at 40 degrees overall, but adequate for my needs
controls: on/off switch position is on top of the bezel and slightly hidden from normal view position it has a light that you can switch off completely via the control panel, otherwise it glows pink when no signal is detected (sleep) or blue/green when in use
this light in my opinion is not intrusive like other displays eg Samsung on/off lights because of its position, nor is it very bright.
menu buttons, 4 x silver with black text, on bottom right of bezel - in my view correctly positioned and are easy to find and read = "Menu", "-", "+", "Select"
other things on the bezel are the HP logo (centre bottom) that is hardly noticeable (unlike on Samsungs) and a white "HP w2207" (right bottom) that is small and inobtrusive
games\movies\photos\graphics
the glossy coating that this screen has, i liken to a glossy photograph rather than the usual semi-matt effect of other LCDs. this gives the effect of extra depth when used with moving and still pictures. i was sceptical when i read other reviews about this but once seen i began to see what a good idea it is. ok if my room was filled with lights that were in the wrong positon i may think again (or move the monitor or lights) because the screen does have a reflective surface, but normally i don't have that problem, and hey aren't all crt monitors and plasma screens reflective?
text the monitor has a text setting that lowers the brightness and contrast that i find i use all the time. im sure that the people who setup the presets in all monitors do so in a place nearer to the sun than we are here in manchester(UK) - i find them mostly far too bright for most purposes.
software this is supposed to setup the color balance etc and admit that i have not used much apart from initial use with Vista machine i have 2 machines XP and Vista. Vista, the software (after a downloaded update) works ok. XP, due to reports on issues have not bothered to install.
usb hub and speakers could do without the included speakers - i've not tried them due to adverse reports usb hub works fine (hooked up to XP machine) but i keep forgetting they are there
both these utilities come with necessary cables to attach to your pc.
control menu: this is accessed via buttons on panel bezel and are easy to use: for adjusting brightness, contrast and other settings
summary: pros: excellent, excellent and again excellent is what i would say to anyone who asks about this monitor (thought I would advise all potential buyers to: 1. read all reviews possible on websites: 2. see product in a shop before buying)
ive had this about a week now and already i would not be without it ive got 2 machines, 1 using the VGA input the other the DVI input, the monitor automatically switches to active one if other one is inactive - swapping is easy via the control menu. moving the position of the screen i find extremely useful. the picture quality is excellent with both moving and still images the 5ms response rate is better than my previous 8ms so an improvement there, for me the controls are just where i need them to be, easy to use and unobtrusive
this thing looks good even when its switched off
cons: only one year warranty note: i have 2 HP printers that are 6 and 4 years old now. the laserjet (£100) is still going strong after 4 year hard daily labour, so i have some confidence that this monitor has the same build quality and will last long after the 1 year (i wonder if this limited warranty period is something to do with the life expectancy of the screens glossy coating and/or the stands wear and tear)
could do without the included speakers that i have not tried but reportedly are rubbish. the usb(x2) hub i have hooked up to my XP machine and can be useful but could do without both the above could be removed and perhaps the monitors price could then be reduced?
Advantages: good features, design, and image Disadvantages: be better if the warranty was more like 2 or 3 years instead of 1
...looking for a new monitor. HP call it "BrightView".
I was really thinking of a "satin" one, so I wouldn't get reflections, though the image from these tends to be a bit softer due to the diffusion of the light through the finish on the surface.
You do get some reflections when you look at the w2207 monitor in a store, but the lighting is usually far brighter than in a home setting.
Plus there are usually loads more lights over a larger area, signs, ... ...some outlets, and on the HP website, the HDMI version is about £30 dearer.
You can get DVI to HDMI leads, but this is an additional cost to you. Plus you end up with a lead that was supplied as standard that is just sitting around doing nothing.
There is another thing about conversion leads, especially if you are using the HDCP (high definition copy prevention) feature by putting a High Definition signal into the monitor.
The conversion from DVI ...

Advantages: Good picture quality, good design Disadvantages: Large base negates LCD space spabvng advantage
I have owned this monitor for over a year now and am very satisfied. The picture quality is crisp and clean with different modes depending on what you are viewing. These modes do stuff like increase brightness or contrast for looking at photos or movies, i don't bother changing modes but i imagine they are useful for specialists. The specs may not be the best you find on the market but I haven't noticed a difference, no ghosting, washed out colours ... ...using it
The design of the monitor is very good, all buttons (of which there are few) are small and discrete and there is nothing to distract from the screen itself. The base is a bit large buton any decent sized desk it isn't noticable. This screen also possesses the ability to be flipped 180 degrees to view thing in portrait, but you need to install drivers for that. In summary, excellent quality, discrete design but plenty of useful features ...

...wouldn’t do justice that the HP can. The primary use for the monitor is use with my desktop pc; however one can easily link up an Xbox 360 or play station 3 for a great gaming experience. It is HDCP ready meaning that it can support new High Definition content and the new HD capable graphics cards that are now entering the market. I thought that this HD capability was just fantastic. Although a HD television would give a better quality HD experience, ... ...television pushing £500 perhaps, that this HDCP feature is great! The shiny/glossy finish adds to this monitors appeal, however I do notice that form time to time when I have a bright light aka the sun though my bedroom window!! Shining on the screen, it can cause some glare and a sight viewing discomfort. Apart from that, the glossy finish makes DVDs and gaming a much better experience. I bought the monitor 2 weeks ago from Woolworths. However, ...

Quick review of HP w2207
Superb picture quality, gaming has been great on this monitor.
Adjustable hight with a simple smooth movement, lifting up or lowering, you can even turn the screen all the way until in "portrait" mode, great for those webpages that would need lots of scrolling!
2 usb ports on the side of the screen, really handy for easy access, great for your mobile phone or mp3 player.
Power button is situated on the top of the monitor, blue light when on, orange when in sleep mode.
All in all a great looking stylish monitor, worth the money ;) ...
