It was not the intention to arrive home as the new owner of a Pocket PC, however on the day it was purchased my funds could not quite stretch to a laptop and i needed something a little more sophisticated than a databank to organise my hectic business life.
After considering all of the options and financial situation, I plumped for the attractive little iPAQ 1940. First impressions were excellent. I was able to try out a number of features inside the shop and i saw straight away that the PC was quick, easy to access and seemed relatively reliable. It was my first expreience of Windows for Pocket PC and users used to the friendly interface of Windows 98 and beyond will be instantly at home with the Pocket PC.
Controlling the iPAQ is via a very small stylus which if placed anywhere other than its holder (built inside the top of the iPAQ) is extremely easy to lose! Mastering the use of the stylus was tricky, but after a few practice attempts was not too bad.
The initial memory capacity of the iPAQ was disappointing. A flash memory card had to be purchased to give an additional 128 MB of disk space.
It is relatively straightforward to connect your iPAQ to another PC to transfer data, through the use of a program called ActiveSync, which is supplied with your Pocket PC. Make sure you check your computersUSB ports however, because when my computer suddenly stopped recognising my iPAQ, I ended up reinstalling the ports!
Overall, a very handy little PC. Ideal if you have never used a Pocket PC before, however if you like to tinker with your computers and you love gadgets, you may find that this one cannot be stretched beyond its limited capability. You will soon want it to do things it cannot do, and may end up frustrated.
To answer a couple of review queries, you are not limited to the pre-installed software. You are free to download applications to add onto your iPAQ, and you are able to install them via ActiveSync. In terms of portability, I have had no problems importing documents from PC to handheld and back to another PC as of yet, though be careful with Excel spreadsheets as you are likely to lose your formatting whilst keeping formulas and figures intact.
If a basic model is all you require, go for the 1940. If you need to be able to adapt it completely, continue to shop around.
