I got my Ipaq 1940 about a week ago, as a replacement for my Psion 5mx which died recently, and so I had been doing a considerable amount of research into a prospective replacement unit. It cot £250 UK, and although I got it direct from a dealer, they are available at this price in Dixons (PC world has them at £299 shelf price/£259 web price).
I considered Palm, and I know a lot of people love them, but I just didn't like the operating system, and the 'graffiti' method of inputting text just doesn't work for me, so the lower quarter of the screen (dedicated to graffiti input' would be wasted on me.
I had gone from a PDA with a permanently fitted keyboard to one that had a keyboard 'on demand' at the bottom of the screen, and the tiny 'keys' aren't too hard to get first time with the delicate stylus provided.
I'm still in the early stages of getting used to this PDA, so these comments may be added to later, but first impreddions are important with such items, which will be on hand all day, every day.
One thing I really like is the appearance of the 'desktop' as it closely resembles Windows XP which I use elsewhere, this is one area where the software (Pocket PC 2003) won me away from the Palm world.
It has Infra-red, Bluetooth, a slot for MMC/SD cards, comes with mains charger and PC sync lead, software, and an adapter to allow you to plug headphones into the unit.
One thing that I have found wanting is the diary/appointments function, in that if you look at a week at a page, it will only tell you that ther is something on a particular day, not what that item is (the psion was like having a double page diary open in front of you to read at leisure, the Ipaq requires you to select the day to view it's contents). There may be a better calender out there for me to download, I will wait and see.
I have already started filling the little marvel with free software (courtesy of cnet.com), and one that I can thouroughly recommend is a game called 'Warring States' which is a campaign strategy game based on feudal china, and it is highly addictive !
I have only one big gripe, and that is the battery, which seems to last for about 4.5 hours on a full charge, which isn't a lot, compared to my old Psion. I know, the colour screen and all the other marvels have to be powered somehow, but I will be looking for a spare battery (probably won't be cheap).
___________________________________________________ Update 19 Nov 03, This addresses the problem of not being able to see at a glance, entries for the week, when viewing a week at a time in the appointments function.
I have found (on CNET.com), a program called Pocket Informant, this can live on the PDA (Pocket PC or Palm), as a separate item, or can take over the functions of appointments and contacts (takes info from the core programs, so no data loss or re-typing). I was so impressed that I used the trial download for a day, then paid (yes, my own money!) to register it and get unlimited use.
This can also be obtained from the software developers (more info and screenshots) at www.pocketinformant.com
To register will cost £18.49 (including VAT), so you will need to download the item anyway and then use the code to validate it.

A quick note on price - Currys have it for a penny under £250. If you buy another (small) item to take the total to over £250 you can use a voucher under code 25OFF£250 to get an extra £25 off. Although P&P is £5.99 I reckon this makes it possibly the cheapest place to buy!

Wow a pocket PC, technology nevers ceases to amaze me!
Advantages: A sexy toy, erm which does lots of important things too! Disadvantages: Can only use some of the functionality with people with compatible devices.
