I admit one thing, - did overpay for my new pocket Ipaq H4150 (£280), I knew it was like £15-£30 cheaper online, but when I sold my Toshiba E330, for a £100 and went in-store to get H4150, I couldn’t resist it, and the thought of going home on train, without music or something to read made me shiver, as if cold.

Once Upon Time I have had Toshiba E330, cons? – well simply no wifi for me. And no Bluetooth and only 300Mhz.
Still thought I was an awesome PDA …good old days or repeated synchronisation.

Then I found my new Friend – HP Ipaq H4150. To be totally honest I always knew of HP reputation and the experience on this “pocket” market. Numerous models, and advances from their own pocket predecessors.

Ok, so back to the thought of Ipaq’s h4150.

Its cons would only be the yellowish tint issue thingy, which you can see while using the pocket pc at a low angle. But I doubt it would bother you.

Good points? – way beats many latest pocket computers in terms of speed and graphical performance on benchmarking.

So, Having Bluetooth means I can pair the device with say, a phone (that if that phone is equipped with a Bluetooth device too), that would enable me to transfer files in-between two devices (up to 10-12 metres range max) Usually it is useful when you want to acess internet via the modem on your Bluetooth enabled phone. This means that wherever you are, you pair devices and go online using preferable the GPRS connection (this is pay as you download, not pay as you spend time online), access the internet real http websites, and do whatever you like.

By the way, talking about internet access, I knew there were many “hot spots” in London, snce I use wireless on my laptop. But I knew there were many more around. It is all true, while on the bus to say through centre on London, detected at least 4-5 wireless points at any given time.. in total the list (in my software) was filled will tens and tens of access points names. Pretty cool. Tells you the signal strength, so you can try&test find out in what building access point is located. Neat thing. If network is secure, knowing the WEP key helps, though always try the generic, common keys like “wireless, admin, linksys, netgear” and so on, it does get you in, not all networks are secure. Many are made to be accessed by anyone, The Pocket Ipaq 4150 also supports VPN and LEAN and many other protocols and certificates, meaning its not just a “Dumb” access terminal, - it does support many complex connections to mailing servers, virtual networks, and high security certificate access methods. Also neat and good to have. There is many wireless scanning/snooping software you can download on your H4150, like me. AisSniffer is popular, and so is PocketWinC, but beside that, I made my point the wireless is really powerful on this device. Supports up to 300Feet ~ 100Metres and I tested that, it Is really that far. When using Ipaq, I found battery to be better than on E300 Toshiba. Number one reason is that if you use wireless( and that does consume a lot of power) you would get around 4,4 hours non stop internet usage, and similarly same amount if you were watching the movie ~ 4 hours. Since Screen is another great source of battery drainage.

Ipaq 4150 does have a REPLACEBLE/REMOVABLE battery; all you do is take the back cover off, like in a mobile phone and remove/replace the battery. Another extraordinary thing is that you do not have to switch off your 4150 or stop what you were doing while replacing the battery, the pocket computer has a Built-In NiCad battery which if very, Very, useful while you fiddle around with battery replacement. It is built in and always stays charged. So if you completely use up your battery back, and it goes below 1% - fear Not! You will not loose your data if ot drains completely, not right away anyway. The very same built-in battery will keep the data safe, for some time, of course while you find a nearest place to recharge it or finish what you were doing. For heavily mobile user, there are standard 1000mAh Li-ion battery, or longer, bigger 1800 mAh battery backs. Of course the Pocket Toshiba comes with a 1000 mAh battery version. Thus all mobile benchmarks with 1800 mAh would be longer. Consider getting full 7 hours of wireless usage on 1800 mAh extended battery (I found cheapest in UK for £35 something, and USA for only 18$ (nearly 9 pounds), we get sooo ripped off)

Screen is that same as most of them, fast easy to use, responsive, 65k, colours, etc and so on, - pretty standard nowdays. For the exception of the yellowish glare… which is only seen at a pretty low angle, so why would you seeing yellowing glare? I don’t know.

Graphical screen, thanks to the new processor and 400mhz I will not boast when I say - IT OUTPERFORMES H5550!
The games load up faster, with smoother transitions and enjoyable play, even graphical intensive games like Age of Empires or Tomb Raider, all play crispy. No more wait for “loading” like in Toshiba E330. it had its time. Still I was very happy with that Pocket PC also.

What I love best I slot in the 512MB SD card into the expansion slot on the top of the H4150.. and load like 160 songs and play them all day, the reason why I say “all day” is because it plays for longer that 8 hours, non stop. Secret it, - switch off the display. Either “toggle” it via the Windows Media 9, or use 3rd party software application (small and tiny like 12k) like me. Since there is no screen to consume the power, you get more for your power, if you like. Media Player would automatically stop playing when batter reaches critical percentage – around 15%. However players like WinAmp wont, but be battery power conscious, just in case.
Another thing I like about this Ipaq, is the video performance, as I already mentioned its fast, and I mean it. Media Player only confirms it, when I play a compressed version of DVD movie Zoolander. Of course for testing purposes only. 1.2 hours movie. But you know you have enough battery for 4 hours non-stop play, with standard battery, again, that it.

Buttons neatly positioned, if you have big finger you may find them harder to press, since they are made rigin to prevent “accidental” pressing. Its alright, and they will do. Side button on the side of the Ipaq, for Note Recording. Now, I heard many moaning from this H4150 users that it presses “accidentally” when you get Ipaq outta its protective case. My reply? Well, either disable the button completely, or re-assign it to perform a different function. In my case it does “next song” in the media player. So I don’t have to get it out, out of the case. Or yet, easier, get a decent case, if you care that much about your Ipaq.

The usage of this Ipaq is priceless, and at price very much affordable. I am still disappointed that prices in USA for accessories for this Ipaq h4150 like 5 times cheaper than in UK. But I would recommend one thing for sure, - Buy them online. You can see what they like in shops, don’t buy there though, you are so going to pay the retail price and shops “making money quick” on top of that. So say for the case which would cost £40 in shops and I have seen that myself, I don’t need their 50% discount that as if nowhere to be found. The exactly same case I found at savastore.com (uk) for £12 plus 3 pounds delivery. Not bad saving, from a 40£. What it is all about Is how desperate you are for the item and how much money you’d want to spend on it.

Good luck.

Don’t make silly mistakes, and I do recommend this IPAQ to anyone considering even looking for a PDA with just “notebook” fuctions. Admit it, - its cheap and powerful. And that pretty much sums it up. Take it from a IT geeky lover. Get it.

Very useful information.

I'm considering getting an HX something series one for my next one but going to wait to see if they come out with something better. Otherwise, a Dell, which I hear are also good. Don't like their PC's but their PDA's seem good
