I have been a fan of the Ipaq since the days of the old Compaq 3600 (way back in the summer of 99!). Since then I have had the Ipaq 5500 (the finger print reader) and now onto my third the new HX4700 (the one with the track pad!). Being familiar with the Ipaq's of old, the first thing I noticed when I unpacked the box was how thin the new Ipaq was, very thin, when compared to my old 5500. The looks though may not be to everyone's tastes, but it does the job. I have noticed though that HP seem to be getting more and more stingy on the "included" accessories. No more slip on case, spare pens nothing! With the 4700 all you get is the one stylus, a docking cradle and a plastic flap/cover for the screen. Hmmmm not looking too good so far then.
Once charged - and this was quick about 3hrs! I powered up and immediately saq where the money I spent all went. The screen was awesome, you have never seen anything like this before, the image was crystal clear! Added to this the ability to flip the screen from portrait to landscape (nice touch), and the memory - oodles of it. On board you get access to 192mb of memory - of which only 135mb is actually available to the user but this is split out in such a way where you'll never be sort for your active programs or storage.
Moving onto storage its also nice to see both a SD card slot and a CF slot. Very useful. Although I did notice when using my IBM microdrive CF the battery life took a major knock - seriously halved the battery life.
The battery life is also one of note, I travel alot on trains and planes. On my old 5500 I would struggle to get three/four hours using the Ipaq full hog (playing movies, games, MP3's oh and doing work!), the 4700 can go on for days!!!!! Quite literally I can catch a train from Birmingham to London, go to work and then catch the train back all on one charge and still have 40%+ to play with........nice!
Connectivity - this has the lot Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, IRda, dock via USB and so. Very simply to do all the above, although I did have a minor headache in connecting up to a secure Wi-Fi router, WPA/WEP always does my head in.
The standard software is fairly good too, it runs the latest windows mobile 2003 - so in reality no problems in connecting to Wi-Fi areas (if unsecured!). The web browser is easy enough to use and the landscape function is a major help in "emulating" a proper desktop - as most web pages are still not yet capable of mobile surfing.
The Ipaq is now a powerful multi tool, I use mine often watching movies stored on my SD card and to listen to music and to use my navigation system. Its a very very useful piece of kit that makes me second guess the need for an Ipod or a personal video player.
All in the 4700 is a nice piece of kit, only downers for me: 1) Poor kit in the box, a nice case would have been nice 2) The positioning of the on button and stylus and headphone socket all in the top right corner is a little cramped. 3) Don't know why they put that track pad in there?!
Everything else is pretty good but notably: 1) Battery 2) Screen 3) Ease of use

Review of HP iPAQ Pocket PC Hx4700
Advantages: The Screen!! Smaller than it's specifications suggest. Range of software and accessories Disadvantages: Possibly won't get an upgrade to newest software, buggy WiFi connectivity
Advantages: Great Size Screem, True VGA, Bluetooth & WiFi, 2 expansion slots!! Disadvantages: Screen scuffs quite easily, Screen cover can be annoying. No case!
Advantages: Fantastic screen, fast, one of the best PDAs available Disadvantages: High-res screen can slow it down; expensive; short standard battery life; relatively bulky
