HP includes a couple of extra utilities, such as a self-diagnostic test and Pocket Panel Lite which allows you to check your PDA's battery life, available memory, and backlighting settings right from the Today screen which really helps. (Isn't it really annoying to go through several screen menus after you've just woken up in the morning and the screen is at its brightest??)
There is 96MB of user-accessible memory ... ...turn back on. Luckily enough HP support was very helpful and wasn't anything to worry about a quick whip out of the battery for 5 minutes and back in, and turned on and was in the startup process - Phew!!!

I've had the rx1950 for about 2 months now and have used it non stop for a good portion of that time! I've split this up into a good and bad section with a basic spec and what you get in the box etc and what I think of them. Hope it's of help to anyone looking at this beauty!
Display: It has a 3.5" with 64K colors with portrait and landscape modes. The landscape mode is very helpful when looking at web pages!
It has a touch sensitive display for use with the included stylus or your fingertip. Using your fingertip can be useful, although I don't recommend you use it a lot!
It has an integrated microphone, speaker, one 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack. If anyone uses skype, this works pretty well!
Mobile versions of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and has Outlook 2002
Software included on CD: Calendar, Contacts, Messaging, Media Player 10 Mobile, Calculator, File Explorer, Align Screen, Beam, Clock, , Memory, Volume.
What's in the box: iPAQ rx1950, lithium-Ion removable/rechargeable battery, AC adapter, USB desktop synchronization cable, slip on case, Documentation Package and Getting Started disc. The documentation really isn't helpful at all!!!
The good. . . .
Running the Windows Mobile 5 operating system, the rx1950 has many of the features of bigger and more expensive PDAs!
It has Word, Outlook, Excel, Internet Explorer, and PowerPoint. This means that the rx1950 can work with Word docs that have tables and images, and you can preview a presentation before the big show for those of you who are looking at this for business use!
It uses ActiveSync 4 and from my past experience with PDA's this has been the easiest to synchronize with my PC!!!
It has Windows Media Player 10 Mobile, but to be honest, there hasn't really been much of a change there, all they seem to do is change what it looks like! (Personal view though). Although it can play all major audio and video file formats (MP3, WMA, and WMV)
HP includes a couple of extra utilities, such as a self-diagnostic test and Pocket Panel Lite which allows you to check your PDA's battery life, available memory, and backlighting settings right from the Today screen which really helps. There is 96MB of user-accessible memory onboard, 64MB of ROM and 32MB of SDRAM, ... and 33MB of key data can be stashed in the persistent storage area which basically means any data wont be erased due to a dead battery! The internal memory is pretty small for what it does, so you'll definitely want to load up an SD expansion card! (1GB has done it for me with loads left, but its all down to what you use it for).
It does have the slowest clock speed for PDA's on the market and i have read other people's reviews about how much they hate "Samsung" processors. Personally with this one, even at 300MHz vs. other PDS's with 600MHZ, it's pretty fast. I've never seen one work at 600MHz so you can't take my complete opinion there!
It doesn't seem to get very warm while in use which is good as i find that having a small device in your hand that gets hot makes my hand sweaty and makes me feel like i will drop it.
It comes with integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b) and has no problem connecting to wireless networks, but be warned, if you driving in your car through a street with lots of wireless connections, it with throw a load of messages to you asking to connect if the wireless is enabled! It doesn't have Bluetooth which is a bit of a down side, but then again I don't really need it.
Ok . . . Now for the bad...
The sound really isn't very great; it seems to start to become a bit distorted at only half the volume level. I do have to soft reset frequently, (about twice a day with quite heavy usage - but it only takes about 20 seconds to restart). Some older programs will have some trouble running on this if they don't have a patch released for the new Mobile 5.
The display really isn't best for long videos, they come out ok but for a small screen, it really is hard to pick out detail! I can just about stand watching small clips on it. I prefer watching things on a larger screen.
I did have a problem when I first got it. I installed so much stuff on there being a new gadget and wanting to see what it could do. So I decided to so a hard reset and get it back to the factory settings. In doing this the screen went all blotchy and wouldn't turn back on. Luckily enough HP support was very helpful and wasn't anything to worry about a quick whip out of the battery for 5 minutes and back in, and turned on and was in the startup process - Phew!!!
The overall . . .
So, if you don't mind sorting out issues in a new device with old software etc, I feel this has a great number of features but i feel it may be a touch too expencive - It does what I want for a PDA and more, and is thinner and lighter as well. Just don't forget to add a few extra pounds to your budget as you will need to buy some extra storage space! Happy hunting!!
Advantages: packed full of features, long battery life, easy to use Disadvantages: poor memory capacity, volume could be louder
I've owned my iPaq RX1950 for nearly 3 months, it being a kind gift from my managing director at Christmas by way of saying thank you for all your hard work, now work a bit harder when you are out of the office!! Needless to say such a neat new gadget has been in constant use ever since, in fact my good lady wife was ignored for some weeks whilst I delved deeper into the capabilities of this piece of kit.
The RX1950 display has the ability to switch ... ...documents, e-mails, faxes and browsing the internet. The only downside to the display is the 5 by 3.5 inch screen. Powered by only 64,000 colours it simply lacks something when viewing web pages. It's a minor gripe as I do this on a very irregular basis but I would prefer something on a par with a TFT monitor in the palm of my hand!
Contained within the features are:
Microsoft Word
Excel
Powerpoint
Outlook Internet Explorer Media Player
Calendar

The rx1950 is now discontinued by HP, ... ...of links should you wish to buy one, and I would say it is a good choice for someone looking for a PDA that does more than just an electronic calender and contacts.
Firstly The rx1950 is a full on mini-pc, not just an electronic diary. The o/s is Windows Mobile 5.0, it comes with a mobile version of Microsoft Office installed (Word, Excel and Powerpoint). Just like 'desktop' Windows, there are tons of free applications (available on various websites) ...

Advantages: Battery life, very slim, quick startup, Disadvantages: Audio quality through headphones
There's not much to say about this little gem. It does everything well (except maybe gaming, its no toy).
The battery lasts forever, and when it finally does give in, your work is safe. Its nice and slim and looks good. The screen is bright and the resolution acceptable. There is of course competition out there with higher res screens, but in my opinion the tradeoff in unit size, battery life, and memory requirement is to great. I know an objective ...

Ciao members have rated this review on average: somewhat helpful Review of HP iPAQ Pocket PC Rx1950
Advantages: Really useful, easy to use Disadvantages: Some aspects have stopped working, won't work with my new N rated internet
I picked one of these up abroad in Canada 3 years ago at a pretty good price, I found it very handy and very easy to use. I originaly used it to conect to my internet at home, but after upgrading the internet it wasn't compatable so i'm making do without. It is an excellent tool, with XP i would sync it using the software it came with, and vistas new Windows Mobile Device Center also does an excellent job.
The onboard memory is not huge, but then ... ...top and it's fine, so it's never been an issue for me. My first stylus wore down but it was simple to pick up another one. The battery is not too bad during use, but it does tend to drop down if you leave it turned off for a week or too, so keep an eye on it. The onboard sound isn't fantastic but I don't use it for that so it's fine.
The buttons on the front however are a bit iffy, some of mine have stopped working. Also my Word Mobile software ...
