After you unpack your Pocket PC, charge the batteries, and calibrate your stylus you are ready to explore the software offerings. The Software suite with this PDA is Pocket PC 2003SE, which Includes all the basics ; Calendar, Email, Media Player, Word, Excel, and Image Viewer. The great thing about all of these softwares are that they can interact directly with your PC Counterparts, ie you can look at your PC's Jpg files on your PDA, Open and edit Word Docs etc etc. Further to these basics are some of my favourites, such as Mobile Messenger, and Internet Explorer. Coupled with a wireless access point these programs allow you to be on the net and interact as you would on your Home PC. This is especially handy if you use your Pocket PC in a wireless environment such as a University, Library or Wifi enabled City Hotspots.
As with any PDA the usual restrictions apply, Internet explorer on such a small screen is quite crammed, and unless you are looking at web sites specifically designed for PDA Screens you will find the picture resolution quite grainy. One good way that Mobiel Explorer gets around this is to allow you to either 'Smart Fit' the whole page to your PDA Screen, or look at it in it's original form and just scroll around to points of interest.
The screen is excellent, and among the best for the 320x240 resolution screens. Allowing wide viewing angles, excellent and adjustable brightness, as well as excellent tactile response to stylus input.
Sound is better than expected, although the speaker is Monoaural, allowing for a high volume level without vibration, and with the addition of a stereo headphone jack listening to MP3's has never sounded so good. Mobile Media Player is excellent, allowing playback of MP3, WMA, WMV (video) Formats. The performance of this PDA is top notch regarding video and audio playback, and with a third party application DivX playback is also possible (more on these later)
The camera is a nice addition to the traditional PDA, and takes excellent Day shots. Provided there is plenty of light in your shooting environment you can enjoy excellent 1.2 Megapixel quality, however this drops off quickly as the light fades, and unfortunately their is no flash on this model. Another great feature of this camera is it's video recording ability, shoot a film and play it back straight away in Media Player, a truly cool feature. The only other gripe I have with the camera is the slow performance taking pictures in high quality mode, a small thing that irritates me at times.
Bluetooth Connectivity is another great addition to this PDA, allowing connectability to all sorts of third party devices, particularly popular for PDA's are the wide range of Bluetooth GPS devices, and I found they work fantastically. I use the Destinator range of GPS Software, and coupled with a cradle for the windscreen in my car it is a fantastic driving aid! This feature alone makes these devices worth several times their purchase price!
The internal memory on this device leaves you with 96Mb usable Rom. This is insufficient if you want to carry around your MP3 collection, GPS Maps, or Video's you have shot. So my first recommendation before you get anyhting else, is to get the biggest SD Card you can afford, they are quite well priced for both 1 and 2GB models these days, and you will appreciate the extra space this affords you. The SD format does not greatly increase power usage and is small and convenient, you will also find that most third party cases also contain pockets for SD Cards, if you have more than one.
The look and presentation of this device is definitely geared towards the professional in a sleek charcoal grey. The buttons are tactile and easy to use and the side buttons (for camera shutter and voice recording) are convenient.
Software setup is a breeze and it is usually just a matter of installing Outlook if you dont already have it (to sync your calender and email with your PC) and Active Sync, the interface software, and then plugging in you USB Cradle for your device. The device is automaticaly detected and installed and you are ready to install any further applications simply by runnning their respecitve installer programs.
Some further advice just to sum up, if you get this or any other Pocket PC you may wish to consider the following :
- Get a large SD Card
- Get a convenient Carrying Case (will keep the PDA clean)
- Get some Plastic Screen Protectors, these will protect your screen from stylus scratches and fingerprints.
- Have a look at what is available to playback DivX video, you will be glad you did
- Get Wireless internet, you will be able to use the Net/Email all over your house, and be able to sync your device, negating the need for the cradle!
- Turn off Wireless/Bluetooth after you are finished with them to prolong battery life.

Even having narrowed things down to brand, there was still a huge choice. Look under Computers/PDAs on Ciao and you’ll see what I mean.
So I had to decide what I wanted from a handheld PC. Basically I wanted the ability to be connected: to be able to send e-mails while on the move; to search the internet (and keep in touch with the ... ...guessed that I got an HP Rx3715 (part of the Rx3700 series I suppose). There’s a big clue in the category of the review!
I got my device at Dixon’s Edinburgh Airport. This was good as I saved over £50 on the normal store price (I paid a total of £360 for the PDA and a 512mb SD memory card). Saving I like – almost as much as spending – so my wife tells me! The hard thing for me was to wait till I got home to set it up and start seeing what I could ...

Advantages: Small, Lightweight, Long battery life, Good screen Disadvantages: Battery cover a bit flimsy but thats nothing.
...the yellow tint of other HP PDA's then you look at the screen from the top at a very steep angle. In normal use the yellow tint has been sorted.
The 400MHz processor is fine for most programs but can be sluggish at times when playing music and surfing the net.
When you get the RX3715 do not look at the user manuals as these will confuse you. They are mainly for Nevo Media Player which enables you to share files over the network which I feel is ... ...to fix it is for HP to fix it. HP are picking mine up and hopfully I will get it back soon. Good customer service, solved within half an hour using their Instant Support which is really good. (instant messaging with an HP person).
I still rate this PDA highly as it is the first problem in 6 months and the service was excellent.
Got it back four days after I sent it and is fine now. ...

Aslo on the conectivity side of things, there is a great deal u can do.. Connect via bluetooth, great for printing via a bluetooth print adaptor. Connect to local networks through the built in WiFi adaptor, great for WiFi hot spots while you travel. Also can be connected to your pc via the usb cable or a pc cardle. I would ... ...to have a place to keep your iPAC safe during downloads and uploads.
Oh and the last thing i almost forgot to say about was the VGA camera, with 4x digital zoom. It's great to have a camera handy on your pocket pc, so you don't have to upload pictures for emails or power point presentations, you can just take the picture while working on your work load, ideal. ...

The iPAQ Rx3715 provides me with a portable and easy to use PDA. It's use of the Microsoft Operating System allowed me to link it with my Outlook Inbox meaning that I could send and receive e-mails on the go. It's connectivity is fantastic through the use of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi networks, allowing the PDA to be used for many other functions. I use it to watch movies (via a 1GB SD card), listen to music and even use Voice over IP telephony to communicate ... ...the capacity to deal with all of Microsoft's Office packages too. Spreadsheets and other documents stay in the relevant format and so can be edited whilst on the move. The ideal replacement for a laptop! The graffitti is exceptionally easy to learn and the interface is similar to that of Windows XP, therby providing little difficulty to users who know their way around. Advantages: Can do everything on the go using a lightweight, easy to use and compact device. Disadvantages: Takes time to set up and SD cards are required for more memory.
Where do I start - it's one of the best investments I've ever made! Don't get me wrong, there are a few quirks which need altering to make it perfect but other than them it has everything I need.
The PDA comes with • Integrated camera - takes high quality pictures which are easily transferred to the computer via a USB connected cradle where you can then edit and print them.
• Pocket word - which is perfect for writing notes or anything ... ...onto the computer it is automatically converted to work on the normal Microsoft word where you can make more sophisticated alterations. Also, the PDA has three writing facilities; either the keyboard where you tap each letter individually, the block recogniser where you write each letter individually on the screen using the stylus (pen) and it automatically puts it into computer type and the transcriber where you write on the screen and it's converted ...
