For all students out there, my advice check out what HSBC has to offer you. They offer a first class service and are supportive during some of the most difficult (financially) years of your life.
MY HISTORY WITH HSBC
I chose HSBC for my student bank account when I started my degree and I feel it is the best thing that I ever did. The facilities/services that they offer are the best on the market. They provided me with an INTEREST & FEE FREE overdraft that gradually increased over the years I was studying. Although at times I exceeded my agreed overdraft they were more helpful than a hindrence on these occasions. I found them supportive and they offered good, honest and sensible advice.
On becoming a graduate I continued to receive an interest/fee free overdraft that decreased over 3 years. I was also offered exceptionally good deals on graduate loans. They also offer excellent deals on mortgages for graduates for upto 5 years after you graduate.
Check out the current deals below:

HSBC will also offer you a credit card & contents insurance at an incentive rate.
Many larger universities will also have HSBC card machines on campus & have specialist student advisors offering you guidance throughout the years. You will also find that all the main banks will attend your university Freshers Fayres to try and sell you their products.

OTHER BENEFITS OF CHOOSING HSBC
HSBC offers an excellent choice of ways to bank including the traditional branch, automated/customer service Telephone Banking, TV Banking, Internet Banking. I particularly find combining the telephone & internet banking useful and have increasingly found it unnecessary to deal direct with a branch based service. Their website is very professional and easy to navigate with the information on all their products at your fingertips.
I really do recommend HSBC to anyone considering opening a student/graduate bank account. I myself have personally taken advantage of most of the products listed above and found them totally invaluable.
I thought I would add a few more details regarding HSBC in general. I now have experience of them as my mortgage lender and I really cannot fault them. The service was excellent a the process very straight forward. I have had good advice from them during and after my mortgage application. They also offer a unique mortgage called the 'Home start' mortgage. Essentially the first three years are interest only with the remainder of the term a repayment mortgage.
Their internet banking has gone from strength to strength with increased features including sending and receiving messages from the customer serivce department.
I have actually come full circle with my banking with HSBC. I am soon to become a student again and have recently opened a new student account with HSBC. What impressed me most however was that I was able to do this via web chat through their website. Very similair to using MSN messenger.
