If you are a student, or about to become one, I would suggest you try HSBC before the others. They give you a £750 interest-free (!) and fee-free overdraft in your first year, increasing by £250 each year! and it won't cost you a penny. They seem to have plenty of branches, and the service is tip-top. They also give you a credit card automatically, although you don't have to take it. You also automatically get a switch and cashpoint card. You can print mini-statements showing all your latest transactions, in and (more likely!) out. These can be printed from any cashpoint free of charge. When you go into the branch to open the account, though, you will need to bring proof of acceptance onto your course.
