You can request to have a PIN for the cash machines - which I didn't want - however, they sent it anyway. ... ...operate a 24 hour lost and stolen helpline, which I did have to call once (and thankfully once only) - which provided the usual slick service. The replacement cards were in my hands after about 4 working days.

They do operate a 24 hour lost and stolen helpline, which I did have to call once (and thankfully once only) - which provided the usual slick service. The replacement cards were in my hands after about 4 working days.

Rewards schemes are non-existant, with the scheme having closed sometime last year with nothing to replace it.
You can pay to insure your card so that in the event that you lost your job, died, etc, the payments would be made for you for a period of time, or repaid fully, dependant on your circumstances.
As with other credit cards, purchases over the sum of £100 are covered by the consumer credit act, affording you further protection in the event of your goods not being up to scratch.
I am fortunate to be in the position to pay my balance off in full every month, so do not pay a penny for my 56 days interest free credit!
For those you are unwilling/unable to do so, the interest rates are below: o First 6 months No fee 11.9% APR (13.6% APR for cash withdrawals) o After first 6 months No fee 18.9% APR (20.8% APR for cash withdrawals)
Thw bank does offer a wide range of other cards products, some examples are: o Switch and Solo debit cards o Gold Card o Platinum card o Various affinity credit cards(eg Arts Card - that donates 1p in the £1 to the arts)
All in all I am satisfied with the service that I get with my standard card and would happily recommend it to others.

I acquired a HSBC Combined card while as a student and I found the bank help and couteous. The card does not carry an annual fee or other charges but neither does it offer any benefits.
Differ from many other cards, HSBC does not automatially increase the credit limit on the card even though you have good payment history unless you asked for it. This is not good as you will need the credit limit in order to move on to HSBC gold card which will offer ... ...to get another card besides HSBC combined card such as Halifax Card in order to build up your credit record while one is still in the university. If you decided not to use the Halifax card, leaving it in £1 credit would be a good way to do so.

...card at it limits with HSBC and 1 at its limit with Halifax. This opinion is a comparison of the treatment I have received from both credit card companies for exactly the same circumstances. Initially after I graduated I went onto the dole for 3 months - fairly typical for students! I realised that on £40 a week I could not afford the monthly payments so I phoned to advise my credit cards of the situation. HSBC said how sorry they were to hear this ... ...is the difference? HSBC have been brilliant throughout my slow struggles to rise up the job ladder! When I couldn't pay 2 months ago because I had a job interview and had to buy new clothes (and then subsequently got the job and had to buy an entire wardrobe as it was a much better job than the minimum wage job I was in before) the HSBC said not a problem so long as I could give them a definite date for a payment - which I did. I have been doing my banking with various different banks and building societies over the years, with varying degrees of success. I have found that the service offered with these cards, whilst not exceptional, is more than adequate to fulfill the basic requirements within the credit card market.

...im not here to say hsbc is the best for credit cards, if you bank somewhere else it is usually sensible to get a credit card with them too. if you run into any difficulties who wants to try and get a hold of an internet based credit card service to sort it out? banking online is great, but only if things are going well! the main thing with hsbc credit cards is that, while they are not the cheapest on the market, and yes do not really provide you ... ...people in my experience choose hsbc for personal banking for their service, no matter how bad you think of banks, you have to be with one...right?! many students pick up hsbc credit cards when they apply for their student accounts...that is another story! but the applictaion form includes a credit card app on it, so keeps it simple and the paper work down to a minimum! I have compare a few banks' student account and I found out that the one I like the most is HSBC student combined account. When you a student account with them, you will get fifty quid, one debit card, a cheque book, and two credit card (visa and master). You can also get a commission-free for foreign currency exchange. On top of that, you will also get interest-free overdraft of up to £1500! Wow, a lot! And, you don't need to worry wether they will approve your overdraft or not, because you don't need to tell them, it is instant!
If you have a student account with HSBC, you are ready for your university life and also for your holiday!

Advantages: Very good student package Disadvantages: None so far on my case.
As a customer of HSBC I have to admit that I have never had any problems. When I first opened my account with them they offered me straight away both Mastercard and Visa in a combined account plus a switch card. I opened this account in 1995 as a foreign student. So HSBC used to be called Midland those days they did not have any proofs of my banking history but still with no further questions I got the full student pack.
I was surprised because most students at the time they could not get hold of a credit card with other banks. HSBC still now as a graduate account has an excellent package which offers Mortgage, Loans and so on with no further questions.
I would personaly recommend HSBC to every student and I am talking from experience. ...
